Sorry to hear you aren't having a good experience with your phone. From what you've written it seems like you have more of a problem with Kies than the phone itself. Many people feel the same way and end up finding other solutions for sync and file management. Before you switch, you might want to give My Phone Explorer a try. You may still ultimately be happier with an iPhone and there's nothing wrong with that, but the SGS2 is the better device, IMO.

In any case ,you can use Odin to upgrade to ICS or you can just visit a nearby samsung care and they will upgrade you to ICS whenever it releases. :)
 
Oh right guys, thanks. Just didn't know you could use iodin for that, so is that done by OTA or from the files you can d/l and anyway i'm very tempted by CM9 when it becomes stable and if i've still got the SGS2.
 
Before you just jump into an iPhone, remember it uses iTunes for a lot, including software updates. I've never used a Samsung device, but I have used an iDevice. And I've gotten similarly frustrated using an iDevice with iTunes. I remember iTunes is very quick to wipe the device to try to fix errors. Even when the errors are minor and I can deal with it, it wouldn't let me sync anything without wiping the device and starting from scratch. Very annoying.
 
Yes jero, think i'm just being hasty but i'm sick to death of KIES and i'm sick of Samsung, love my sgs2 really, i learn something new about the phone nearly every day but when Samsung promise us something new like ICS i expect it not have to wait and wait. I've learnt how to root and flash a phone etc and i had CM9 nightly for a time but that didn't sync with the lappy so i guess i'll have to keep waiting for ICS or CM9 stable, like millions of others, wow i've done all this without swearing!
 
I think the media does more a disservice to users than Samsung where it comes to updates. There really isn't much difference with the major release cycle on any platform, but for some reason, the media loves to whoop it up about the next greatest Android version ... and the fact that you can't have it (or at least have it soon). It make people feel like Christmas morning has come and their stockings are empty. At first you are disappointed and then you get angry with Santa. While ICS is the next generation of Android, there are many aspects users don't seem to like, or at least have trouble getting accustomed to.

Apple works just as hard and takes just as long to get their updates and upgrades out to consumers, but the difference is, since they control both hardware and software, everybody gets it at the same time, or close to it. Android has to add the manufacturer and the carrier layer to the mix. It's not a perfect model ... none of them are.
 
Technically CM9 is ICS .

Samsung will roll out ICS with Touchwiz overlay which will look the same is Gingerbread .
I can see the 4.0.3 ICS for Open Europe at the sammobile page
Other countries and variants will require quite some time

Honestly, I've been a Samsung user for over a year and I have never used Kies except for updating from Froyo to Gingerbread and for getting the phone's drivers installed to the PC. LOL.

If its just transferring videos and pictures and music, just pop the phone onto your PC in Mass Storage mode and it will be faster.
 
can i get ICS using airdroid! been using kies air but dont think u could get ICS OTA. one more question for the day:- put some pics on the phone which always show in wallpaper-gallery, me and the ex have now split so i want the bitch out of my phone but for some reason i cant delete them, i've tried factory reset, i've tried CWM - wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache, format system, wipe dalvik and they still appear when i flash the phone to another custom rom, the phones rooted so i tried using root uninstaller pro but i dont know where they are stored, any ideas lads, ps thank god i got hold of a jig, my counter was hitting 25!

Why use cables in 2012?
 
You don't need kies to transfer files from computer to phone.I have samsung galaxy s plus and I don't use it.Just set your phone like this:
Settings>Wireless and network>USB settings and now check Mass storage.

I'm using a Samsung Galaxy Nexus, and I've never even heard of KIES. And I also have Ice Cream Sandwich and have had it since I bought the phone.
 
sorry to be the one to ask the dumb question here but why is it better to go from one program that updates your phone to the next. All that itunes was ever good for is music. Lets say you synced your phone with hour desktop and now want to do the same with your laptop you have to wile your phone. Also I am completely with you on the Samsung thing and think it is absolutely stupid with the Kids program. I like the phone more than I would like the iphone stupidity. For the pictures are you sure they are not saved in the microSD card because when you wipe the phone it only deletes the internal memory and not the external. For the microSD card you have to go into the options and unmount it to format it and mount it back up. If the pictures are still there they mah have synced to your google account on google plus so you will have to look around no easy way around it. That beside the point I still think the Galaxy S 2 is much better than the iphone and all of the extra work that you have to do once you get it jailbreaking and all to make it into a decent device.
 
@alex - People, mostly Americans, were weaned on using iTunes on their devices to manage media because of their iPods (which have been around for something like a decade?). In other places like Europe and Asia, where Nokia was more prevalent and other mp3 player not related to fruits, mass storage and Media Player mode was more common, which is why many people look to Kies which was like the Samsung version of iTunes.
 
I connect to my phone's storage directly. If you use windows you'll need a driver I think. I run linux (as does android) so there's no need.

It does seem odd, maybe even stupid - that there is no Android interface for all android devices. iTunes has been very successful. You'd think Google would try to emulate it.
Then again I hate iTunes, and just want direct access to my device, but I'm a little nerdy in that way. I imagine most other people would prefer some kind of pretty software that transferred music and photos etc.
Indeed I often wonder how the average Android user gets music onto their device. I admit it's a really easy process, but most people are DUMB when it comes to that sort of thing.

A few reasons:

1) A cable charges the phone. I don't actually have a charger for my phone, the PC is the charger.
2) No software needed, USB disk mode, drag and drop.
3) Wifi might not be available, e.g. wifi is only available at home.
 
I tried out Kies Air and it took me a long time to get it to work. Turned out that my Windows 7 computer did not like the current version of Java and refused to install and run Kies, so I found an older version of it in one of the threads in another forum and installed that on the computer and Kies started working just fine. I did not like it though, so I moved on to other apps and finally settled on Remote Web Desk Top for transferring files. I got bored with that and now I use Bluetooth which is way slower, but something different.
I do not think the frustration comes so much from the manufacturer of a phone as it is the computers and the apps that we use to communicate back and forth. In other words, the manufactures all install Android, it is the Android system trying to communicate to many different types of operating systems using a endless number of different apps. Experiment and you are bound to find a solution.
