Root Risks of rooting this phone?

I've heard from my friend that rooting an S2 Skyrocket is a pain.
I am wonder what the chances are of messing up and bricking my phone if I root. I really do want to so I can make full backups of my phone, as well as flash roms.. But this is my only phone currently and I won't be able to get a new one for a month or two if I end up bricking it.
What are the chances of me bricking it trying to root?

It is an Samsung-SHG-I727
Android 2.3.6
Kernal version is 2.6.35.11

Since that seems to be the norm that people use.
Just really wondering what exactly the risks are of doing this. After rooting I should be okay, because even if I brick my phone I can get it back with a backup, but I can't do a full backup without rooting on gingerbread..
