Roaming fears!

Ok - I'm off to the States next week, and want to ensure I'm not charged for, well, anything!

On my old phone, I could get email when I demanded it (very slowly). It was free to get texts, and if I never answered my phone, I was charged nothing.

I'm on the same plan, but want to make sure my phone does not do ANYthing without my permission.

How should I set it to ensure that texts can come through, email is only when I open the app and demand it, phone calls can come through or be rejected, but EVERYthing else is off?

You'd have to turn autosync off and enable roaming mode off. Then you would have to enable it to refresh emails (IMO) and disable again.

Also, if you divert calls to answerphone (reject after ring), you will get charged

Never been charged before for voicemails - only been charged if I pick them up. :S

Ok - will disabling the enable roaming mean I don't get texts/phonecalls, or are they separate?

No, this will simply mean you will not allow the phone to get a data connection ( G, E - Desire doesn't work on 3G in US?) Anyway...

You can still recieve calls and texts with roaming off - i did it myself in Turkey last month and then just used wi-fi where available

Only problem is that your not able to send or receieve MMS messages either.

If you divert all calls your phone doesn't ring so the call doesn't leave the UK. If your phone rings and you then send to voicemail, the caller is essentially leaving the UK and then being diverted back. This uses the country you are in's network. You should be charged. If not, you're lucky. Stick with it.
