Roaming - how do I know how much data?

Pinmac1

I am going to France for 3 weeks holiday (I'm from the UK) and I have found that my service provider, Virgin, do some roaming packages. These all run for 7 days and are 5Mb for

Okay I'll try to give you a few headers to give you some options. First, if you are willing to root your device (you can always unroot after the trip): you can install droidwall. Insuring you know exactly which apps have access to your 3G data and aren't draining your usage.

I've found 3G watchdog to be the most accurate data counter out there, and you would not have to "set it up". It's already set up! Just maybe reset the counter once you get off the plane :)

Also, for my monthly rates on emails (I do not download pictures, so I get solely text versions of the emails) I use about 20mb/month. That's probably receiving about 20 emails a day and sending about 10-15 emails a day. So In total I'd say 1000-1500 emails (cause the replies can get very big) is about 20mb of data. But keep in mind I use push emailing, and I only poll my network every 60 minutes which uses about 100kb every time I poll (I have two email accounts set up).

Also, browsing the web can really drain the data usage. I make sure I use Opera Mini because I disable pictures from loading, and it compresses the webpages by up to 80%. So I'd say each webpage is about 10-20kb so in 20mb you could view about 1300 webpages using my method.

Then again if you'd like pictures, keep in mind each picture is about 20kb minimum and can get very large.

I hope you find some of this information useful!

Thanks for such a detailed answer. No time to root, I'm afraid, knee deep in packing. I've had a fiddle with 3G Watchdog - I didn't realise that you could set it to zero! I have reset it for today and turned off Wifi to see how I get on. I have Opera Mini installed but not thought of turning of pictures.

Stupid question time - is it the received data I should be counting, or the sent, or both? I plan to only update manually.

You can root your phone in a couple minutes using this!
[APP]SuperOneClick v2.1.1 (Finally fixed!) - xda-developers

Just make sure USB Debugging is on when you connect to your PC.

To answer your question though both sent/received data will count towards your data usage unfortunately :(
Downloading/uploading. So when you view a page first you upload the URL of which site you want to view, probably only 1kb, and then you download the site. Hope this helps! :D

Thanks, that helps - not the answer I wanted of course! So if I do get one of the packages I'll have to keep an eye on the total Mbs used. Thanks again.

Just back and had a fantastic 3 weeks. Just for info for anyone wanting to do the same, I did go for the package offered by Virgin. I had one week at 5Mb and one week at 10Mb. I was only checking email and checking weather with a bit of news headlines and the Mbs went very quickly!
3G Watchdog helped a lot in keeping an eye on it, although it reset to 0 at one point. I was baffled until I realised it was 14th and it resets every month on 14th. Virgin sent me a message to say I had 808kb left on the last day and it tallied within 100kb of what 3G Watchdog was telling me.
