My update hasn't gone so well. After restoring my backup my messaging doesn't load, I can't sync my contacts from the sony ericsson site..it keeps trying and killed my battery. There are some other weirdities as well so I think i'm going to reflash and only back up a few things.

I had a weird glitch when syncing all my contacts from gmail. Everything was showing as duplicates on the phone, then I deleted from the phone which ended up deleting from gmail contacts only to realize they were no longer listed under 'My Contacts'. But now I got everything sorted.

Not mine. I've been going for about 4 1/2 hours non stop downloading and tweaking and i'm down to 60%.

Check your settings/about phone/battery use/ and see what it was that was eating up your juice...Mine was the display, but half the day I installed a live wallpaper Christmas tree
just for fun and cause I can now do it...I plugged it back into mains power and put back the default blue wallpaper... I assume that is what did me in...

ok, so I plugged my phone into my laptop, pc companion said I had to update. I did, it downloaded 17mb of something, then finished and it said my phone was upto date. But, nothing has changed. still 1.6 etc. Do I have to use seus now to finish the update? kinda confused.
You probably got a newer version of PC COmpanion? Try SEUS now.

The first thing I did was check the phone's update-checker (Settings -> About Phone -> Update [I think, it's not in front of me at the moment]) and I let it check for an update that way.
It told me I had an update but I required the computer to do it. Good, that's 2.1.
Then I launched PC Companion and connected my phone -- it immediately told me I was all up to date. Fail.
So I knew the phone was telling the truth, and PC Companion was lying, simple stuff. So I launched the SE Update Service.
SEUS started up and told me I needed the latest version of PC Companion -- I had no idea it was out of date -- and it downloaded it for me. I then checked PC Companion again once it had updated and it still told me I was up to date.
So I ignored PC Companion and just turned back to SEUS. SEUS clearly found the update and I was able to update without issue.
Conclusion?
PC Companion will lie to you. Just run SEUS (SE Update Service) and do your update with that.
In other news, I'm glad I was simply patient and didn't go doing any funky flashes to my phone. I knew it wouldn't be long for us Roger peeps to get the update. People just need to learn to chill out. Here we are, safe and sound.

On a side note, DO NOT FORGET TO FOLLOW SEUS'S SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONS.
Run SEUS. Your phone must be OFF.. for at least 30 seconds... and NOT connected. Then you hold the back button down and THEN connect the USB cable from your computer to your phone. Then SEUS will ask you to release the back button... and then it will do it's thing.
Read. Do. Enjoy.

Why do people make comments that don't help anyone?
It's nice to simplify things because some people need step by step directions, some people may not read instructions, some people may encounter errors that are fixed by simply getting back to the roots of a problem, and so on.
Simplification is never a bad thing... as it has the potential to help people.
... making fun of people over it, however, serves no purpose other than self-inflating one's ego in the form of being a bully.
At least simplification actually helps.
Wouldn't you want things to be in layman terms if you weren't exactly an expert or good at that particular thing?
And glad everyone's finally getting the update. Been playing around with the phone for 2 weeks now and it's definitely an upgrade over 1.6. A little bit of adjusting, but a few things I noticed that have improved are:
1) Louder volume on incoming calls (regardless of using which speaker) (especially speaker phone though)
2) To some of my friends, they said my calls sound better as there's not as much background noise as before the update
3) Phone will not automatically lock after a call
4) Much zippier phone
So hope everyone's enjoying their "new" phone!

i looked on the sonyericsson website and it said there is a new software for the x10, i pluged it in to the pc and i have both "pc companion" and "update serice" and both says my phone is up to date, i go to settings and it says my firmware is 1.6 so it is blatantly not up to date, do you know how to update it? because i have updated it but still running 1.6
thanks. i am in england southampton.You're not alone, mine did the same thing. Hell, my phone freezes my laptop when I try to put it in flash mode. My wife's netbook will go through the flash cycle, but then the phone gets stuck in flash mode and I have to pull the battery, and my desktop just ignore the phone entirely. This phone could only be a bigger pain in the ass if it was shaped like a penis.

Have you checked your phone to see if it tells you that there is an update? Settings > About Phone > Software Update and "Check for Update"
Just let it check. Does it tell you there's an update, and that you need the PC? If so, THEN try running SEUS.. maybe if the phone recognizes there is an update, SEUS will then allow you to upgrade.. long shot I guess.

Ya the display is eating up my (and my gfs) battery. But we don't have live wallpapers or anything active. Screen at 100% brightness. Like it will burn up 5% in like 10 minutes with the screen on. Something isn't right. Typing this message used 2% of my battery.

I'd definitely turn down the brightness as much as possible, that'll speed up the battery killing process.
You know what worked for me? Rebooting the phone after a complete charge! Sounds ridiculously simple, and it is, but it's worked lovely for me. On Friday I charged my phone overnight, unplugged it at like 7am, did nothing on it until about 10:30am when my g/f called me and already the battery was drained down to about 70%
That's with the brightness at 0, wifi off, bluetooth off, location services off, screen lockout at 15 seconds. Yeah, not happy.So I decided to try something I seen online, and after charging it all night I got up yesterday morning and unplugged it at like 7am and immediately power cycled it. With all my settings the same, I was able to clean up my phonebook, set custom tones, send files to/front my phone via bluetooth, test about 10 messgs, download some apps off the market, made/took about 5-10 5 minute calls, surf the net via wi-fi for about 10 minutes or so, and when I went to bed at about midnight I still had 50% of my charge left
