Rogers Dream 1.6 Update

RE: FLASH PLAYER
The Flash Player for the Hero / Magic / Sense UI is currently only Flash Player 9.

Adobe has yet to release a version 10 of the player so many flash things won't work b/c of that.
 
I thought I'd share some comments from RogersMary via Twitter.

Before doing so, I'd like to state for the record that I am truly embarrassed by some of the personal, unnecessary vitriol I have seen directed at Mary.

She is a spokesperson, not a policymaker - for heavens sake.
That said, I can't imagine how tough a job it must be to be the public face of a company with such a shitty attitude towards it's customers, and be fed/have to pass on such ignorant drivel by the company you work for.

Hello,

I got the new Magic and updated, but in some of my emails where there are different fonts used I can only see the code and asterisks, and some websites don't load properly. Is there something I need to download to make them work properly like Flash, or does flash come already build in?

Another question is what happened to Google Maps in the Apps store?

I don't really know any solution for your first issue (the emails' one), but as to Google Maps, they now support Android 1.6, so you won't find them with a 1.5 Market.
 
I replaced my Dream for a Magic with the upgrade before the E911 snafu.

My wife tried typing on the Magic and hated it, but she only gave it 5 minutes; She much preferred her Dream.

So today's revelation that Google Maps is no longer available in the Android Market for people running firmware version 1.5 really freaked her out.

She immediately asked me how she could root her phone.
(...along with a familiar-to-all-of-you diatribe about how she shouldn't NEED to do that.)

I asked if she wanted to change to the Magic, and she now said YES. (The fear of losing an increasing number of applications was worse than losing her keyboard.)

So... @RogersMary or others, have we heard any word on when the Dream->Magic offer will be reinstated?

Sorry, I think I must be missing something... don't you already have Google Maps on your phone? It comes stock with 1.5. Was it removed by the Rogers bug Fix?
 
Good point by Zavod, why is it that I don't see Google maps in the Market itself? Shouldn't I see the app in the market even though it is already installed on my device?
 
I see both Google Voice and Google Translate in the Market when I search for "Google" and they both show as "Installed", but I don't see Google Maps in the market at all!

WTF!

So then, as long as you don't delete Google Maps (can that even be done to a stock app like Google Maps?) then while it is sucky we can't get it in the market, how is it an issue?

I'm not being argumentative, just wondering if I've misunderstood the issue.
 
No, you can't delete stock app.
Yes, you have maps in your image.
No, you don't have the latest version with layers (or do you?).
No, you will not get them updated.
You don't see them in the market because market will not show you the apps that are not compatible with your OS.

So the issue is that we can't get the _updated_ version of Google Maps with bells and whistles, which we were unable to get before the 911BugFix because it is only available to 1.6 and up, but we will be able to get this on the Magic once we get 2.1. Is that right?

Sounds all well and good but is ancient news and we come back to this every few years and it never changes for the good. The only way things will change is when we stop buying contracts and start buying unlocked phones. Then we don't have to argue with providers when we don't like what they do. That competition bureau is not there for you and me.
 
Well I rooted my dream today and it sure is nice. I get consistent 3G now where before I never got it. I was hoping to have the Sense UI on it though. Is that an extra that can be put on?
