Root [Rogers & S4] Help please, on an HTC One X...

Hi Everyone, I hope all is well with you guys/gals! I'm a new-be so please excuse my ignorance. I want to buy an HTC One X that is already unlocked (I'll be going to Europe & staying awhile). I then want to root it. I found an already unlocked phone from a major retailer & want to have it activated through AT&T. But then I looked on Amazon & found what they called the International Version but they said it runs slower than the US version)? Which one should I get? Does the US one work in Europe? Now as far as 'rooting' when I went to a rooting site it said the rooting didn't work if the phone was unlocked? I'm confused! What do I need to buy? Thanks! Bill

I can answer a few of your questions, but some will have to be left for others.

There are two major differences between the International model and the US/Europe LTE model.

The HTC One X (Tegra 3) is the international model. It runs a Tegra 3 processor and does not have LTE.

The HTC One XL (or One X S4, or One X LTE, or AT&T One X) is the model that was sold a lot in the US and Europe. It has a Snapdragon S4 processor and LTE.

So the XL (or any of the other names for it) can have faster data speeds when you are connected to a LTE data network.

I'm not sure which bands work on each phone, and on which carrier, so I'm gonna have to wait for an expert in that part to swoop in and tell us. That should help you figure out which model to buy, that way you get a device that runs on the network bands your carrier uses.

Thank you GuitarG20! So I would want the AT&T One X. I want to use AT&T as my carrier in the US & since this model was sold in Europe also it has to work there! I just need to make sure I can root the phone if I buy it already unlocked. I wonder why the article said not to root it if it was already unlocked? Maybe I'll repost my question in the HTC One X thread section. I'm in the International thread section... Thanks again! Bill

Don't mean to 'hi-jack' your thread but if I get an HTC One X that is already unlocked (from Best Buy, I'll use AT&T as my server) can I then root it??? Thanks! Bill

Is this am at&t branded model or a htc branded model?

Like scotty said above, that depends what OS it is running. Android 4.1 closed the security hole that allowed people on at&t to gain temporary root then permanent root, if you will have an at&t branded model.

If you will have a htc branded model, it's relatively easy because you can just use htcdev to unlock the bootloader and flash superSU

I can move this thread out there, or to the AT&T all things root section...

The thing you need to remember with the AT&T model is that only some versions of the firmware can be rooted right now. With the jellybean update they closed the hole that allowed people to obtain temp root and install a recovery and superSU (which is what allows you to use root). I'm not sure if they have found a suitable hole to achieve this on jb yet.

The ATT One X is not identical to the international One XL - the LTE bands are different.

Question is, will you be using LTE in Europe? Will there be LTE cover in the places you are going to (it's far from universal).

In any case, the International XL doesn't support ATT's LTE bands, so if you want LTE at home you won't have it in Europe and vice-versa. I'm really just posting this so that it doesn't come as a surprise.

Thanks GuitarG20!, Whatever you think is best in so far as moving my post. I'm a new-be, you know best! The phone I want to get is from Best Buy, it's unlocked & can be used on AT&T or T-Mobile. So it's not AT&T specific. I should be ok with this phone, shouldn't I? Can I tell if it has the Jellybean update before I buy it? Or if I buy it before I hook it up to AT&T?
Thanks Hadron! I'm going to Europe without any real plans or agenda. Probably spend a couple of months there just 'playing it by ear' in so far as where I go & how long I stay. The phone I want to get is the US phone with LTE. So if I get this phone will it still work in Europe? (I see it won't work on LTE, but will it work?) Thanks again! Bill

The way you can tell is by looking at the device itself. If it has the at&t logo above the screen, it will have at&t branded software on it. if it has the htc logo above the screen, it will not have any at&t software modifications.

The only time you need to worry about being able to unlock and root is with the AT&T branded one. I believe the unlocked model can always be unlocked via htcdev (someone correct me if i'm wrong please!)

Thanks again GuitarG20!, Think I've got questions/answers in duplicate posts going. It's sold unlocked to be used on either AT&T or T-Mobile. So does this mean it's an HTC model? Is 'unlocking the bootloader' the same thing as 'unlocking'? If it's sold already unlocked then all I have to do is root it so I can tether with it, correct? Thanks! ; ) Bill

FIFY ;)

I answered this question above a little, I think. Also, I'm gonna move this out to the S4 root subforum, since it's probably closer to the phone you're gonna end up with.

(Can't quote as Tapatalk having one of its fits, and quotes an entirely different post!).

Yes, should work in Europe.

In detail, for Europe you want GSM 900 & 1800 bands plus WCDMA 2100, and all One X/XL variants have these. I don't think it will have WCDMA 900, which is the other band that is used by some networks, but that's only used by a minority of networks and not at all in many countries, so is less important.

Thank you GuitarG20 & Hadron, Ok, an up-date. Best Buy has 3 different HTC One X's available. 1). The one that is un-locked says HTC at the top of the case. With 3 G speed, NVIDIA Tegra 3 w/ Ice Cream Sandwich, 4.0 with a Micro SD Slot & is 16 GB... 2). It's not unlocked, 4 LTE, 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, 1.5 GHZ & says AT&T on the top of the case. 32 GB... 3). It's not unlocked, 4 LTE, 4.1 Jelly Bean, 1.7 GHZ Tegra 3 Quad. 32 GB... I apologize for not having this info at first. I was going to get #1) above because it is un-locked. My understanding is I can root it. But can I change to a European sim card for Europe use? I thought I read where these phones don't have sim cards. Or is this what the Micro SD slot is for? Thank You! Bill

16GB plus microSD sounds a lot like the Evo 4G LTE ( http://www.gsmarena.com/htc_evo_4g_lte-4665.php), though that is described as Krait rather than Tegra. If that is what it is it won't work on any GSM network (so not ATT, and nowhere in Europe). Best to check before buying - you need GSM compatability if using it in most of the world.

1.7 GHz tegra sounds like a One X+ - updated One X. Middle one sounds like the One X LTE to me. I think either should work in Europe. Unlocking these days depends on the network in the US - whatever you may think of it, right now that's the only legal option.

If you were planning on roaming with your US SIM the locking won't matter, but if you want to use local SIMs when travelling you need an unlocked handset.

Rooting is separate from unlocking. The people in the relevant root forums here can advise best on how to root the different versions and any issues with that. I don't have one myself so am not an expert on how these vary.

Hadron is spot on with his analysis of the models.

However, I am not sure how easily any are unlocked. The at&t branded model can be rooted if running ICS, but I don't think a root method is available for JB yet.

Whether you can unlock the X+ depends on whether it is carrier branded - since you say it's not unlocked my guess is that it is. I don't know if you can use htcdev on that model... Best to ask in the X+ subforum (i believe one exists...)

I wouldn't recommend the 4G LTE if you want to use GSM networks here or abroad as it won't do very well.
