Help Rom Manager error message, help required please

Yes. I am planning to step into the world of custom Roms but am trying to approach it slowly and safely and the first step after Rooting is to set up a backup/restore system so I’ve got belt and braces firmly attached before I attempt a new Rom install and risk bricking my shiny new phone.
Regards

You can't backup (belt & braces) untill you've flashed ClockworkMod Recovery.

What is ClockworkMod?

Clockworkmod is not a rom, it is an app with a very friendly ui that allows root users to do various things. The first and most important would be flashing a recovery image. With this you are able to create a nandroid backup
of your current rom should something you do crashes or bricks your phone. This would be done through the recovery menu, you
can get there through clockworkmod or simply power off the phone then press volume up
keys while pressing the power button. The other thing it allows is the installation of custom roms.

Many thanks for the explanation about ClockworkMod. That’s the route I will take.
(I appear to be struggling to understand the new terminology but no doubt it will all become clear in the end)
Thanks again
Regards

My phone is rooted I think. (At least when I go into Universal Androot – v1.6.1 and select Root it gives me a message saying ‘Your device is already rooted’)
I then go into Rom Manager and select ‘Flash ClockworkMod Recovery’ (which says Current Recovery : ClockworkMod 5.0.2.0 Latest Recovery ClockworkMod 5.0.2.0)
I confirm phone model as ZTE Blade and something processes for maybe 40 seconds and I then get an error message ‘An error occurred while attempting to run privileged commands’
If I then attempt to Backup Current ROM I get the same error message.
Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong or what to change to get round the error message?
Regards

It's safer to use Recovery manager :-)

Hi there littler20......

Just a couple of points:

to permanently root your Blade/OSF, I would re3commend the special kallt_kaffe modified Blade version of Z4Root, which can be downloaded from Modaco, here.

Permanent root for 2.2 Blades! - Android @ MoDaCo

I assume you are on the original Orange 2.1 ROM, so the Z4Root above will work OK, and give you permanent Root privileges.

As you probably still on 2.1, and still Gen 1, ROM Manager latest Recovery(5.0.2.0) is only for Gen 2 Blades.

You can flash an appropriate Recovery from within ROM Manager, go for 3.0.1.4.

This can be done within ROM Manager by launching Rom Manager, selecting/tap All ClockworkMod Recoveries, at the bottom, and tap on 3.0.1.4.

This will give you an appropriate ClockworkMod Recovery for your Gen 1 device.

Not sure I would go with Recovery Manager, as it is not being updated, it was good at the beginning OK, when there was no support for the Blade, but ROM Manager is so now much more up to date, IMHO....

Recovery Manager was updated a couple of weeks ago.

Ok, I'm not sure if anyone does care about this app anymore, but I've brought it back form the dead and updated it to work with 2.3 devices..

mostly inspired to get it working on my Skate...

Happy times

But this was in August, like two months ago....previously updated before that last March!!!

My point is, and was, that the necessity for a dedicated Blade Recovery Manager is not really apparent to me, as Rom Manager supports Blade fully, is more functional, and has other uses incorporated into the app.

Also, it is being continuously updated, and is available on the Market. There is also a paid-for version, with extra functions.

Blade Recovery Manager was necessary when there was no support for Blades/OSF in Rom Manager, early on, kudos to Seb, but now it is out-dated and irrelevant, IMHO.
