Root Rom Recommendations

Hi all,

My wife just bought a Motorola Triumph (she wanted the largest screen phone available while still keeping her grandfathered $25 plan) and asked me to root it and install a custom rom (if needed). I'm familiar with rooting and have done it with multiple devices, but I was wondering if any of you could recommend a rom for the MT that will still preserve all of its functionality (she doesn't want to lose the camera for instance) while fixing a few of the problems I've read about the MT (such as GPS lock, etc.)

Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Short of a recommendation, I can direct you to the All Things Root area for the Triumph: Triumph - All Things Root - Android Forums wherein you'll find several ROM threads with downloads, instructions etc. :)

I like the name of this one: http://androidforums.com/triumph-al...oid-android-ver1-6-beta-source-17apr2013.html ;)

Currently, there are a couple of roms available. There are stock roms, cm7 roms(Gingerbread) and cm9 roms (ICS). Currently, the only up-to-date cm7 rom is mtdev cm7. for cm9, I would recommend paranoid android (see link above) or cm9 by MTDev. Both of them are still beta-ish, and the camera is a little funky (no video) but it is being fixed. For more info, go check out the rom's separate threads.

There are a few choices like others have stated, the jist of which is

Stock rom(Froyo) - everything works like stock, usually tweaks to improve user interface and performance

Cm7(Gingerbread) - everything except micro HDMI works as stock

Cm9(Ice Cream Sandwich) - micro HDMI doesnt work, camera just got fixed but sometimes it gets messed up, or so I've read, I run cm7 myself

As for updates and such, the mtdev team runs cm7, cm9 and cm10 for the triumph and usually release updates as soon as they fix or change things that make it better otherwise no need for updates

There are newer roms like paranoid android I believe its called but I don't really know about that one so u may wanna read up on it, or see if someone who knows about it chimes in

Edit: also although many many user say this phone is 1 of the simplest phones to put a custom rom on( and it is pretty easy) I highly suggest watching videos, although most are outdated it'll give you an idea of what I'll be doing, ask questions if u have any, u may not want to ask cause you may think they sound dumb or others may think that but it doesn't matter, there's an awesome community here which usually jumps right on helping ppl and you'd much rather ask questions before something goes wrong instead of after lol

Based on the OP's comment regarding the need for a camera, and the fact he's doing it for her to fix some stuff like GPS locking, I would really recommend going with CM7; the camera is fully working (both front and back, for stills and video... can always get an app to take panorama photos if needed), and it's extremely responsive and stable. GPS locks well, and you can't really go wrong with this rom: It's been out long enough that almost everything is working perfectly on it, while the ICS/JB roms are still being developed; gotta work some of the kinks out before they release a fully working, stable release candidate...

The latest ICS Paranoid Android tester is working very well, but there are still hiccups here and there, and no video recording (both cameras work). Also, Google Maps/Navigation sometimes freezes up, so using the phone as a GPS can be up in the air. There's a text glitch as well, which can be a lil annoying at times.

CM9 is also very decent, and the devs have changed over to release code. Very stable, especially if you flash Bsydz's kernel. But, no video and no front facing camera. The lack of FFC kinda pushed it below PA on the list, but otherwise it's an excellent rom.
