Root Rom tools, not good for ov?

I looked at youtube and several sites saying how easy it is to use rom tools to download a custom rom and takes the possibility of you messing something up out of the equation. My phone is rooted, I am usually a quick learner, and fairly knowledgeable at computers. But when I see the tutorial for flashing a new rom and such it seems to be very confusing and messy if you make a simple mistake. I have reread and reread for days on this stuff, but would like to use this app to just keep things idiot proof. Sadly though, because of reading so much in these forums, it seems that for our phone rom tools is not recommend for flashing and installing a custom rom; and that you have to use the threads listed here.

Is this true?

I want a custom rom, for more space and features, such as speed, etc. But just a tad bit worried about screwing everything up.

Thank you. So based off this information, I cannot easily just download roms from the app like is the apps tutorial and apply them without applying other kinds of fixes first. Or am I wrong?

Rom manager does not have any roms available for download for this phone. Download them from the links in this or other optimus v specific forums and flash them from your recovery following the instructions in the thread you found them. Do not use Rom Manager to flash. Make sure you only flash roms developed for the optimus v, other optimus versions use slightly different coding and will not work properly, or will not load at all, or in the worst case could possibly brick your phone.

My suggestion... since your already rooted, you can use Rom Manager to flash the custom recovery since that is confirmed to work with our 'V'. Download a ROM from here and put it on the root (not in any folder) of your sd card. Download gapps from here (no it's not a xxx site) and also put it in the root of your sd card. Then use a program like Titanium Backup to backup your stuff. Make sure you have a gmail account too so your contacts are saved. Reboot into recovery (I do believe you can do that from Rom Manager) and make a backup "nandroid". Wipe cache and Dalvik cache. Then under mounts and storage, format boot, system, cache and data. Then after that, install zip from sdcard and choose the ROM you chose. Then flash the gapps. Reboot the phone, it'll take longer to boot the first time... up to 5 minutes (or longer or even shorter). When it loads, just skip your gmail account setup until the phone finishes booting and setup your wireless settings first then you can click on the market app and it'll run you through it. I suggest rebooting then download Titanium backup and restore your stuff. That's it!! Once you do it a time or two, it's just quick and easy and you'll be doing it blindfolded. :D
Now, you can play with Rom Manager. I guess what I'm trying to say is that look how easy it was to do it without Rom Manager. My personal opinion is that it's still too "iffy" for my standards to install a ROM. A recovery... sure, a ROM... no. Again, my opinion.

PS, When your in recovery, the volume up/down buttons move the cursor up and down and either the home, menu or camera button is the select button (depends on what version of recovery is installed). The back button always works to go back.

Thanks everyone. I appreciate the replies. I agree with the above statement-----

"My personal opinion is that it's still too "iffy" for my standards to install a ROM. A recovery... sure, a ROM... no. Again, my opinion."

I agree with that. I think until Rom manager has a way to just download and install a rom, I am going to stick with just stock. Too risky to me. Thanks about the backup tip, I do already have titanium backup and have everything backed up.

Thanks for the help, I really appreciate it.

I respect your decision. The program is making it better and more useful for us 'V' users with each update. However... if you change your mind we got your back. That's why we're here!! ;)

Edit:
PS. In the title you put 'Rom Tools'. You did mean Rom Manager right??

I just wanted you and everyone else know that I had just installed a ROM using Rom Manager. I bit the bullet and experimented with the very program I swore against!!
Using the free version, I flashed the recovery. I then downloaded thru RM, mrg666 IHO ROM (BackSide and BobZhome was in there too but they were the second to latest ones). I then flashed the ROM I downloaded and IT WORKED!!!
I'll give a more detailed experience later when I'm more awake. But I just wanted to let you know.

Awesome! does this mean that It might be safe to use shortly to download & install roms from this app without all the hassle of downloading it from computer and then putting it on the sd card and all that?
