Roomba commits suicide

Was the hotplate on the floor?! Did they have the Roomba on the kitchen counter?? I know those things don't climb...

Right, so it had been "put on the sideboard". So all that's left is "didn't turn it off properly" and the mystery is solved.

Do these things turn themselves on on a programme? If so, I'll bet that's the "mystery". Then it detects the drop at the edge of the counter, so instead wanders onto the hotplate which had been left on and very hot - or are they going to tell us that the robot turned that on as well? ;)

I find this really funny for some reason. *Aside from the house burning down...

I know a few people that have them, theirs are programmable to start cleaning automatically. I have no idea why anyone would put it on the counter though. I wouldn't put something that runs around cleaning the floor, on a counter where one might prepare food. Everyone I know that has one, lets it park itself in its own little charging base. I see from the article I linked to, that the owner intends to sue.

  1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
  2. A robot must obey the orders given to it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
  3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

I would suspect that's what might of happened, it was left, thought it was off, but wasn't and so it started cleaning the counter. IANAL but I don't think the owner will have much luck suing. Left something cooking on a hotplate, on and unattended, that's irresponsible and gross negligence IMO. If he's negligent, insurance probably won't cover the damage either. There's probably no proof that it was completely off or whatever, because it looks like only the ashes remain as it appears to have been totally cremated.

Maybe they washed the floor and put it on the counter to keep it away from the water, then forgot it. Maybe they had a broken pipe and a flood. I put stuff on the counter in both cases, but the stuff I put up there is too big to forget.

He can join the exalted ranks of people like the American woman who sued MacDonalds because she didn't realize her coffee would be that hot, and tried to drive with it wedged between her thighs.

What kind of idiot puts a vacuum cleaner on a sideboard?

I think what the stupidest part of McDonald's coffee case, was that the judge didn't throw it out and admonish the woman for being an idiot..

I put an electric type broom on the breakfast bar to empty it. The crap doesn't fall out of the cup when it isn't upright.
The whole shebang, charger and all goes up there when I wash floors. I have a floor mate and any extraneous junk is just in the way. I've left the Oreck Housekeeper up on the breakfast bar for a couple of days when I was working on crafts.

yikes!!! you will all hate me...but..I feel the judge was right! The coffee was not your average hot beverage served at your average fast food chain...or sit down establishment for that matter.... Mcdonalds coffee is heated to a point that it could do major tissue damage if it spills and makes contact on your skin...unlike all other chains...that sereve their coffee at a lower temp...add to that you are being handed it through a drive thru window....hot coffee spilled in your lap is one thing.....beyond boiling point beverage being handed to you ..through a window....that can cause 3rd degree burns...should have a warning label and extra caution....the lid should be secure etc....

or change the temp of the coffee...

The coffee was hot but not beyond boiling point. and the judge was not right in not dismissing it. The woman's own negligence was involved in the incident.. the attorney argued that 180 to190 was defective, when in fact the common brewing is at 190 to 195. she got fresh coffee, and the spilling of it was her own fault.
