Root Root and S-off

Easiest, up to date way to get s-off and root this phone? Any info would be helpful. Thanks!

Edit- I am on 3.17.651.4 jellybean 4.1.1

I'm running into a problem. When I run rumrunner it gets to the waiting on adb part and then it says usb connection error please fix now! I have all the drivers installed, HTC sync, and the firewall is off. I'm stuck..

Edit- also I rooted my EVO and installed twrp and I'm guessing running rumrunner 10 times broke the root. Maybe that was the problem. Idk

No it doesn't. And another thing, when I go into device manager and click on my device, it says something like, device can't be started(error code 10)

You don't have HTC Sync installed, right? The instructions say to uninstall it, but you mention it above.

I'd delete everything that says HTC. Then plug your phone back in and let it reinstall the drivers, don't install HTC sync.

See if that fixes it. :)

uninstalled htc drivers, htc sync, plugged my phone back in, all the drivers installed successfully. I ran rumrunner, and it got to the adb part and it said usb connection error. i went i checked adb devices in command promt and it doesnt have the device listed. This is becoming a real headache :/

If you right click on "My computer and select Manage Computer, then go to Device Manager, it doesn't list it there?

What OS are you running?

If you're running Windows 8.1 you'll need to perform some special instructions and install different drivers. Otherwise, I may need to chew on this a bit, or enlist some help.

after uninstalling htc sync and the drivers then reinstalling the drivers, it fixed that issue with device manager. it says device is working properly. but i keep running into the same issue with adb. it cannot find my device for some reason, and im running windows 7. Also, i factory reset my device and reinstalled the drivers, still saying usb connection error in rumrunner.

First off, I never asked if you have USB Debugging selected under your settings on the phone? Make sure you have that selected.

When you are running the commands in the CMD prompt, are you running them from the right folder?

In other words, are you holding the "Shift" key while right clicking on the ADB folder and selecting "Open CMD window from here"?

That might be where you are running into issues. If you're running the commands from there, we might need to go another route.

Wait, have you tried to use a different USB cable to connect your phone? If you have another cable try it, let us know if it works.

Don't give up, we'll figure it out eventually. :)

Debugging has been checked from the start. I've been using the right folders and I've deleted and redownloaded rumrunner and the sdk tools.the holding shift down is something I forgot about, but I tried it and my device still can't get recognized. I've tried several usb cables, nothing.. I've even booted in the bootloader several times to see if adb could recognize it there, ehh you already know where I'm getting with it

Crap, I was hoping it was a faulty cable.

I'm stumped at this point on this one. Only option I see now is to get a Live CD of Ubuntu loaded and see if it will recognize it from there.

Or try and see if you can make any progress from a friend or family members PC. This bugger is being ignorant, and I can't figure it out. :(

i got great news!!! i started up my laptop, plugged my phone it, drivers reinstalled, and i typed in adb devices in command prompt, and boom! my device is listed :) i have no idea what the issue was, but its all good now.
