If you're looking for the easiest way to Perm root your Evo Shift 4G you can head over to http://www.evildevnull.com and grab the toolkit you will need to do so for free. This will allow you to do the following.
Temp root your shift with out ADB commands
Downgrade your rom back to Froyo 2.2
Fully root your Shift in 2.2
allow you to re- upgrade back to Gingerbread 2.3.3 rooted
the kit also provides the latest Gingerbread update so you wont have to get kicked by the Over the air update.
