Root Root failure on Froyo

Hey everyone,

I downloaded SuperOneClick (can't remember the version; it offered two ways to root, one of which was Gingerbreak).

I had read on this forum (and others) that in order to root the Atrix with 2.2.2, you need to do the following first:

1.) Install a microSD card.
2.) Download the correct version of SOC and use Gingerbreak.

I did everything correctly (debugging mode, ensured that the SD card was mounted, etc...) and the root locked at something related to ADB (I'm away from the computer so not sure what exactly it was). It didn't brick the phone (thankfully), but I really want to try and get this working.

I also understand I'll have to re-root if I want to take advantage of the OS update that supposedly is coming out soon.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! I can post the history once I return home this evening, if it'll help.

*edit* The log file said it was Killing the ADB server, with success. Then when trying to restart ADB server, it hangs at a DOS window.

Ok, just wanted to clear a few things up before I give my input. It seems like you think the root process is determined by the version of Android (Ex. 2.1, 2.2, 3.3, etc...) which is not the case in this situation. I was confused by this when I switched from my 3gs to the Atrix.

The root method is determined by the System Version, which for the most recent update is 1.8.3 for ATT.

When this update was prepared, it disabled the SuperOneClick root method, so you'll have to use the Gingerbreak method

Here is the link:
[HOWTO] Easy Root 1.5.7 & 1.83 using GingerBreak - xda-developers

Please note: After you run the Gingerbreak software on your computer, look on your phone's app drawer for a Gingerbreak application. This confused me at first. Just a heads up.

When they update the Atrix to 2.3, you will probably lose root, so you will need to re-root when a new root comes out.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the clarification. This stuff is all new to me too. Jailbreaking an iPhone, however dangerous it could've been, was a fairly straight forward process. I didn't realize rooting wasn't as easy.

I had issues rooting a Sony Xperia X10 as well, but for different reasons.

I'll check out the GB stuff in that link when I get home. Does this root make me loose data? (I'm at work and don't want to view a page such as the XDA page ...)

Thanks!
