Just Tried AGAIN! Still nothing. But, I do have something else to report. At the bottom of the recovery screen I have the line

-- Appling Multi-CSC --
Can't access to '/system/csc/XEC/system'.

Would this be a reason why the phone wont root.
Two other things to mention, the updates run in recovery mode and the phone reports its been updated, and two, in the directory lidt in recovery mode, "downloads" does not appear so I have to put the . zip files in the root or a.n.other directory.

Try this one, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=12874680#post12874680
it worked for me, and make sure to put the zip file at the root of the sd card and not inside any directory/folder.

ok, where do I get Framework and ODIN,,,,, I'm really surprised this is proofing so difficult to root, but certainly noting else is working

What framework? and Odin? There is no requirement of Odin to root the device.
Just use the 'Old rooting method for 2.3.x', read the first page.
Seriously if you are not willing to read then you should not root the phone, you will only end up messing it up.

I've spent 2 hours trying to download Stoneyboys' universal root file but with no luck, endless bloody surveys and signing up to premium rate text message services.

Not impressed.

Thanks for your help. Tried that, and for the first time ever, in recovery mode, the phone did something with the file. It seemed to load it, but, while attempting to load busybox, it reports the phone isnt rooted! I have no idea what to do other than put the phone back in the draw.

An update. I've got the phone unlock and I'm using it again but, rooting is still impossible. The files I've downloaded from the various threads for S5830 have not done anything. I'm now running into memory issues and having to delete things off the phone. As a phone its fine, but as a tool, its next to useless if I have to keep deleting stuff of the main memory just to receive text messages. Any further ideas on what I should try? a couple of the zip files seem to load an the phone reported successful update but, no root.

I went to the download link, it asked me to complete surveys, or download toolbars etc., did atleast two, didnt get the download, why????

Moderator Note: There are now two guides for this forum. A specific guide for the Galaxy Ace 2.3.3 and the Universal root guide for many Samsung devices (including the Ace) in the second post. Seeing how both of these are similar, we're going to keep them in the same thread. Thanks for understanding!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Download attached file and copy it to your sdcard
2. Run in maintenance mode (power + middle button)
3. Update from sdcard, select the file upd_1.zip.
4. After the update completed - reboot in normal mode.

Thats all - now you have rooted ace with android 2.3.3, and superuser in your apps.
Hi, I tried several times this protocol with my Samsung Galaxy Ace GT-S5830L and it always shows me the same error: "E: Error in /tmp/sideload/package.zip (Status 7)" and the installation is aborted. Please, help.

Make sure the file is on the root of the sd card and not inside any folder, and also make sure that its named as 'update'.

Hi Guys - no matter how many times I try - I can't open maintenance mode when pressing home+power buttons at same time.
Also - do you need to extract update file before copying to SD card??
Thanks

Hi, sorry for my ignorance.

Haven't unlocked a phone for many years now lol!

Basically all i want to do is unlock (for free if poss :)) my new S5839i from the 3 network. Can I just check the following pls:-

1. Even if 'just' an unlock from netwk req, rooting has to be done?
2. Upon downloading the zip file to my laptop/pc (to root the phne), i need to get this zip file or the unzipped file copied to my SD card?

your help is appreciated

==========================================

Hurrah, finally able to make calls from the phone.

Followed following procedure:

a) eventually got root zip file for 2.3.6 gingerbread, copied to SD on phone
b) downloaded following apps (though still unsure whether needed them all!):-

super su
busy box
galaxy ace unlock
galaxy toolbox

Though unsure as to whether it was the 'Galaxy Ace Unlock' - (unlikely as displayed "....unlock code is one of these codes: or or or ...") or

'galaxy toolbox' that unlocked the phone

However, although i can now make calls from the hone with my o2 sim (prev locked to three network).

I cannot access the internet (have allowance with o2) have had look at network settings and all looks good, any ideas please?

also still has the not so lvly 'three' splash screen upon start up (just after sams 'gal ace GT-S5839i' splash and just before main 'samsung' splash)

would appreciate help please re internet access and getting rid of three logos?

Hi,
I am an absolute novice so please be gentle with me.I have a GT-S5830 which I purchased on eBay UK.
Android Version:2.3.6
Baseband Version: S5830XWKT8
Kernal Version: 2.6.35.7 - perf - CL1170808 dpi@DELL139#1
Build Number: GINGERBREAD BUKT2

I have recently updated it officially via Kies from Froyo 2.2.1 to Gingerbread 2.3.6.
I now intend rooting it with a little help from you guys!I have read many of the posts and have more or less understood the process. I have two queries that I am not sure about.

1) Which file should I be using: upd_1.zip or universal_gb_root_v25.zip

2) All the posts I have read say: "Download attached file and copy it to your sdcard". What It doesn't explain is how to do it. It may sound dumb but I would like to know how I finally put it on my SD card? Do I first save it on my desktop on my PC? And then what? Should I remove my sd card from the phone and using a card reader transfer it to the sd card from PC?
if somebody could throw some light on these two matters, it would be much appreciated.
Many thanks,
UF

1. Use whichever works for you.

2.Have you never transferred any music or any files on your sd card before?
Just copy the zip file on the sd card, use the usb mass storage mode or you can also remove your sd card and use a card reader to transfer it.
