Root Root guide

I've installed the update via pc studio so im now running 2.1.
Firmware 2.1-update1
Baseband i570EXXJC1
Kernel 2.6.29
root@SE-S610 #2
Build ECLAIR.XXJD2

Im a little lost with the part about the apps, i haven't installed any apps what so ever yet so Is it just a matter of following the 'Rooting Your Phone and begin using Apps2SD' part from If you have not installed any new Apps, and wish to now root your phone, you need to perform another upgrade using Odin.

But this time you will use the i5700_LK2-08_PDA file. (remember to extract it into same directory as Odin.) you just downloaded?
 
OK, so you're on 2.1, and got there using Samsung upgrade method. The only problem is your baseband Version is JC1.

The rooting Firmware states it requires JC3 or later. You will have to update your firmware again, only this time using Odin.

Follow the root guide from the very start, and update using Odin to JH6. Then install the Root firmware after that.
 
I know this is going to be a stupid question, but what exactly does this do? I know it makes the phone faster, but I don't know how it achieves this or anything.
 
What does rooting do?

It installs the latest firmware release (much later than Samsung's upgrade does).
It removes apps installed by your carrier.
It allows you to intall whatever apps you choose. ie livewallpapers, Facebook, Twitdroid, tethering etc.
Move apps from internal memory to SD card, thereby freeing up space.
You can add multi-touch.
It allows you to individualise and customise your phone.
It speeds up your phone. (by as much as 3xtimes).
It increases the longevity and re-sale value of your phone.
It makes you more attractive to the opposite sex. (Now I'm lying).
 
Sounds good, thanks. I'll give it a try if I'm able to get my phone sorted out. Having serious battery problems that I just started a new thread about. I might end up needing to return it so can't risk the warranty yet.
 
OK after much delay I have finally done it. Rooted and installed a Kitchen rom so I could lose the "rubbish" apps I don't use, use live wallpapers and move apps to sdcard. Worked a treat (eventually ;-) ) using Beerkan's tutorial. REMEMBER to enable apps2sd using the samdroid tools before you install anything or you will have to start over with the kitchen rom :-(

Hi all, trying to follow this guide but I assume before I do anything else I need to get the phone to talk to the pc. So I installed kies and enabled debbuging on the portal and I can see it is installing usb drivers, but then kiers cannot see the phone. Any other way to achieve this? By the way I'm using an old windows xp machine and the phone is on 2.1. Only need to root at the moment. thanks
 
I find the Kies connection for Odin can be very "flaky" unless you right click on the Kies icon on the taskbar and quit it. It seems to start it's self at every reboot so you need to kill it each time.

ok unistalled kies.downloaded NPS but getting error i5700 not supported although NPS can see my device. Back to Kies, installed latest updates but still can't see the phone..What I am doing wrong here?

Can you connect at all via USB, ie. can you "mount" the device and see the uSD card on your PC?

Do you have any anti virus stuff running?

Do you have other USB stuff running?

If so try turning them off and make sure you are using the ORIGINAL Samsung USB lead.

Yes I can mount the SD card and use it. No anti virus, yes original USB cable, but (from what you say sounds the usb connection is critical) .....this is an old pc and the USB ports are USB1 so I will try on a newer pc tomorrow.
In the meantime what I have come across is

another way of rooting which was succesful but I dont think it clears any splash screens/mobile network related software and more importantly does not allow me to install apps on SD. I will get there ....eventually.Thanks:)
 
Good luck with your efforts. A good link BTW, I really hate having to boot into Windows to make alterations to my phone and the Linux version on the link is very interesting.

A point I'd like to add to this whole root thing is that I ALWAYS use a laptop. If you use a normal mains powered PC and there is some kind of power failure you probably will end up with a brick!

finally on a 3rd pc the samsung driver worked....the phone is rooted ok but I can't see the apps2sd....used LK2-8 as above
 
Thanks, finally ...all sorted....I did try the samdroid mod but then I was getting no dialler errors so cleared the cache, reseted to factory default etc and thats when the phone wouldn't boot, so I thought I would end up with a brick. Then I found a later vertion of samdroid tools elswhere, put it on the sd and installed from there. All working fine now.

I have the Galaxy Portal 2.1. so I just tried the root without the firmware update. All was going well then I got the following displayed on the phone:-

Phone tried to reboot but just sits there after the progress bar reaches the right. Tried to root it again but same result.

have I bricked it or is there a way out of it and what, if anything, did I do wrong?

Got the phone sorted, updated the firmware as in your first step. Cant' get into recovery mode by pressing the 3 buttons the thing just boots up but at least I have salvaged the phone
 
Yes thanks mate, I didn't realise that you had to keep the buttons held down for 5+ seconds after the phone started to reboot, everything is sorted now. phone is rooted and app2sd part also working fine.

Don't know what went wrong the first time as I did exactly the same thing second time round. Well I think I did lol

lol :) i know the feeling, when i rooted mine a few months ago i was a mess of nerves and posted here loads with little questions :)
