Root Root my S5

Most custom recovery's such as TWRP and PhilZ will back up the efs file automatically but it is always a good idea to use Root Explorer or similar to keep a copy of your efs file on your PC as its loss or corruption can render your phone unusable.

Ok so I followed the instructions and I now appear to be rooted, when I launched es explorer it asked for root permissions which is good. I was led to believe by a couple of youtube videos that the first time I opened Super SU it would ask to disable KNOX. Should this have happened?

It used to on the CF-root kernel method on Knox 2.0. Don't know if that applies to any other rooting methods or Knox 2.3. You can freeze all the Knox applications and SecurityManagerService by using Titanium Backup.

I can't actually find any way to open the KNOX app or find the settings. It does tell me a KNOX version in settings though.

TB wouldn't let me do it without the paid for version that I don't have yet. I ended up using package disabler for now.

I haven't actually noticed any problems so far, I have root and I've installed root apps without any problems, I also have TWRP installed.
Is it worth messing with KNOX if it's not causing problems, is there a risk?

That is why I linked you to the TB pro, paid, version as that is the one you need for freezing apps.

Knox can prevent you from accessing certain areas of your phone and not allow you to write to them. If it doesn't affect your usage so far, then fine.

I'm seeing some KNOX packages in Titanium that have a strike through them, is it possible that SuperSU has already disabled them?

I also get an error when trying to disable KNOX following the instructions using terminal. Do you have any idea why this might be? Thanks

Yes

Not used that method personally. Just TB.

I'm thinking Super SU might have already done it but I didn't get the popup.

I just don't like it when things don't go quite as they should :)

Just noticed.

The above link is for removing an older version of Knox Security from Android 4.3, Jelly Bean. That could be the cause of your issues since Knox has had a couple of security updates since that was written.

Ok thanks for that. I did notice that on 4.3 there was a KNOX app that could uninstall and configure KNOX. This doesn't seem to be on my phone since lolipop.
Anyway it doesn't seem to be affecting anything so I think I'll stop fiddling with it for now.

Cheers Slug! Next time I'm in court, remind me to get you to come and give me a character reference!

Right, as I've just rooted the latest firmware release from Singapore, OC2, using this kernel... I know it works on all G900F firmwares.

As you have the International model, G900F, you will need the SM-G900F (International Qualcomm) CF- Root kernel from post #3 of [SM-G900*] CF-Auto-Root. The thread describes how to flash this using Odin with step-by-step instructions. Please read them carefully and thoroughly.

The CF-Auto_Root does not have a file for Verizon's S5 running 5.0, which is SM-G990V. Any thoughts? The video posted claims they are rooting the S5 running lollipop, but doesn't say where they get the file from.

As per my previous post... I would root first and then flash my preferred custom recovery, TWRP.

DO NOT... I repeat... DO NOT mess around with the .PIT partition files. You do not need to and they can brick your phone unless you know precisely what you are doing. You do not need ADB for rooting and a custom recovery. Just Odin.

I'm in the Woe is Me house now.....

48% Lollipop downloaded.... I can't even turn on DATA w/o the download continuing again.....

I need a local in my home area to help me thru this, Flash in Haste is not what I want to do.... Can't afford to brick it, no money to replace it.
