how can i root my phone.

the main reason i want to do this is to delete the loud startup & shutdown sound files

Which phone are you asking about? Is it the Huawei Honor U8860 mentioned in your profile or something else?

I've moved your thread into a subforum for devices that don't have a dedicated discussion forum

... AND I did some reading up on the N6. As much as I hate to send you off to another site, there was some discussion on XDA about the N6: Neken N6 a good choice?

It looks like the easiest route is to use the eroot tool provided in this post: xda-developers - View Single Post - root 6589T

You could also try looking for any information on rooting the "mtk6589t", which is the basis for the Neken device.

Let me know how you get on or if you run into issues - just keep in mind that the cheaper Chinese phones will have varying levels of support (more on that here), so I may be somewhat limited in how much I can help.

Good luck!

thanks very much

i don't really understand root. apart from being able to delete system files what else is the cool things you can do with root

also what is the risk in using the root software you posted? andwill it delete my data, restore it to factory settings

We've got a few prepared guides on root and related terminology that you may find useful:
• http://androidforums.com/faqs/450904-rooting-best-practices.html
• http://androidforums.com/faqs/443075-root-terminology.html
• http://androidforums.com/faqs/617220-youve-went-rooted-phone-now-what.html

In short, root gives you full, unrestricted access to the file system and OS on your Android device. Generally speaking, root enables you to change just about anything about how your device operates - depending upon your skills and dedication, of course. The drawback is that "with great power comes great responsibility"; it's a lot easier to break things with root than without.

Unfortunately, I'm afraid I can't speak to the specifics of that particular root program. I haven't used it personally, so my honest answer is that I just don't know. Based on the rest of the comments in that thread, though, it doesn't sound like there is much risk of data loss. With that in mind, it's always a good idea to back up your critical data before performing any sort of root action.

i have read a bit about rooting and it looks like a custom rom will be the best. the question is which rom will be compatible with my phone & what is the best? for performance & battery life?

i have also read that flashing the kernel combats battery life better than just flashing a custom rom, is this true & how do i do this?what kernel do i flash to?

ok i just tried to root my phone with the eroot tool. i press the big green root button. it does its thing fora minute turning the device off & on. on the computer software it displays a page with red boxes. what should i do?
have attached the screenshot

i have downloaded a root checker on my phone & it tells me i am not rooted

if i install/unzip a custom rom & it either crashes half way or doesnt perform well on the phone could i then just wipe the phone & install another rom?
what i mean is can a custom rom brick your phone or have you always got the option to goto recovery and wipe. im asking this as i want to experiment with certain roms

Glad you got the root thing sorted out!

I'm afraid that finding a custom ROM for your device may be a bit more difficult though. While many root methods can be safely assumed to work across a variety of different devices, a ROM has to be built specifically for your device. The reason is that the Android filesystem structure is fairly uniform across all devices, so root options are roughly the same. Hardware can vary wildly from one device to the next (or even different regional variants of the same device!), so the OS has to be tailored specifically to handle that particular hardware. Never flash a ROM that isn't built for your device, that's a good way to get in trouble in a hurry.
