Root Root newb looking for suggestions

Hey guys, I have been a member on here for a while but haven't posted much. The last time was when I had a semi-bricked Vibrant due to an OTA update I got while rooted. I got the problem fixed, thanks to suggestions from you guys, but I decided then I wouldn't root again.

Well, I'm over that now. I have a Samsung Vibrant that is all stock and still running 2.1. I've read in a few places where people do not suggest getting 2.2 over Kies...why is that?

I want to go fully rooted: custom ROM with goodies, overclocking, etc. but I am not very computer/tech savy when it comes to this stuff. It's mainly just all the tech jargon used that get's me confused and I just say "forget it."

For right now, I don't want to constantly change ROMs and all that, I just want to get a good basis down for rooting such as a solid backup and other safeguards in case something goes wrong again.

Then, I want someone to suggest a good custom starter ROM. I want goodies, but I also don't want to be overwhelmed by something that isn't stable or has so much changed that I'll feel stuck.

Some questions:

What is "voodoo?" I hear it mentioned all the time but haven't seen an explanation.

Does anyone just find a good, solid ROM and stick with it? It seems people are constantly changing theirs.

When it comes to the small (or large) OTA updates that T-Mobile/Samsung release how does rooting affect this? I've heard some ROMs block the OTA updates. For the ones that don't, is it safe to install the update?


Sorry for such a long post, I just want to cover all of my bases before jumping into this again.
 
TEam whiskeys BIONIX V currently is the only with the official OTA 2.2 I believe. I had been running axura for the longest time but finally bionix V is I think the smoothest for me.
 
Agreed! Bionix V is the ACTUAL OTA 2.2 Froyo upgrade, (with team whiskey's touch of course) Runs like the wind!
VOODOO is a file system that "speeds up" your phone by making it more efficient than your stock Vibrant's file system...thus virtual lag elimination is achieved!
By flashing Bionix V, your phone will be automatically Voodoo ENABLED. It is embedded in Bionix's flash.
 
Team Whiskey is not the only one with the OTA update build. There are a lot of KA7 builds. Wait a week or two and you will see some really interesting things happening. 2.2 is about to be old news. 2.2.1 is available, and stable, and it is just a matter of time before more ROMs come flooding out based on this build. On top of that 2.3 is just around the corner ready to make it's way to the vibrant. Almost all of the 2.2 custom ROMs I have run since early December are better than the T-Mobile/Samsung Official update. Honestly, I know you said you don't want to flash a lot of different ROMs but if you don't, how will you know what you like best?

As for not wanting to flash a different ROM on a regular basis: that's just temporary. What I should have said is that I want to move slowly at first until I'm sure of what I'm doing and all of the steps to do it correctly.
 
Well lets get you rooted first. I suggest the super one click method. Pretty much the fastest and easiest way to get started.

I think most everyone thinks this way before they actually do it. But, once you do, the process is demystified and things will make so much more sense. Soon you will be jonsing for the next version of Bionix (or whatever you choose to use) and will be leaving work early because you saw a new announcement somewhere on-line and need to get it on your phone. HA! It really does get addictive.

This is almost certainly true. I have a problem not constantly tweaking things, especially when it comes to my truck, but while I'm not necessarily tech savvy, I love new technology and the idea of tweaking my phone to my liking is very tempting.

MD is quite right once you do it and find out what this handset is really like. We have 2 and once my wife saw how well mine was working she had to have hers set up and we both have Bionix V. Could not be happier. I cant wait to see what TW comes up with next.
