Root root newbie

Okay folks, i need help. I recently came back to Sprint and i have a Photon 4G. I have been considering rooting my phone but i have ran into a small issue......a complete and utter lack of knowledge on the subject. I have been watching vids and reading posts on forums for a week and still feel lost. Roms, kernels, mods, backups, bootloader, clockworking...... my head is spinning. I have seen the benefits of rooting and would really like to root my device. Could sum1 please help me.
