Root nexus one after 2.1update-1?

Before purchasing my Nexus One I had read many threads on rooting and installing 3rd party ROMs and such. This got me very excited about the possibilites of better performance and increase options of customizing etc.
The day I got my device, I forced the update just to be on the latest software.
Now I am stuck trying to find any information to suggest if I can root directly onto the updated software.

Can anyone help me out?

Root is the same but if you install Cyanogen's ROM it will overwrite the update unless he has updated it with the latest OTA, not sure last time I checked he was still on the old firmware.
