After a co-worker asked me to install a new ROM on her Optimus T, and I agreed to do so, I discovered the paucity of information about what ROMs are compatible with this phone and what to do about the baseband.
The Optimus T (P509) and the Optimus One (P500) are the same phone, essentially, with the latter being marketed outside of the United States and seemingly very popular. My co-worker's LG Optimus T here in the US is on the T-Mobile network and hasn't drawn nearly as much attention from developers.
This forum was invaluable in guiding me through the process. Although it took considerably longer than I anticipated, here is what I did:
[as always, if you can't afford to brick your phone, do a Nandroid backup first!]
1. Root: for versions prior of 2.2.2 use Z4root, for version 2.2.2 use gingerbreak (see BobbyGoose's June 6, 2011, thread)
2. Recovery: go to the Google Play Store and install ROM Manager. Open that app and run "Flash Clockwordmod Recovery." I found that I was unable to open ROM Manager to boot into recovery; instead, to get into CWM recovery use the three-fingered method: with the phone off, hold down the pwr - home - vol down buttons at the same time, three seconds or so after the LG appears, release the buttons to boot into recovery.

3. ROM: I installed Cyanogenmod 7.2 for the Optimus One (p500) and the Google apps for it. Flashing the ROM and gapps was the easy part, the hardest part was finding out that I would not brick the phone by flashing a ROM built for the p500. There is no official CM for the Optimus T.

4. Don't forget to flash the Google apps after flashing the ROM.

After flashing the ROM and gapps, the P509 had no service provider. It was a phone that could not make phone calls.
5. Baseband: thanks to Jayvone1 for posting in the thread Installed CM7 - now won't recognize provider. I followed the steps in the above thread for flashing a v.20 of the baseband and it worked perfectly.

This post is by no means a tutorial on how to install a ROM on the Optimus T p509, but hopefully it will help someone.
