Root ****Root Slate 7 Support Thread****

First as far rooting the device it wont delete any data, but again being the bootloader is still locked by HP unfortunately there cant be any recovery put on it yet, but it can be rooted. Also I stated the software is buggy and can been kinda difficult to get root but it will work just have to have patient.

As far as roms there isn't anything working at this time. It would be nice to have some devs look into this but as I said beings the bootloader is locked down. I have seen some trying but with no luck so far, so hopefully someone will soon, it is a new device so hopefully they will have some roms out.

Thanks for the welcome! I just joined since this seems like the only place with discussion about the Slate 7. Normally, I'm on the XDA forums.

What type of root is it? Permanent? Or will it disappear after the device reboots?

Hopefully, someone will unlock the bootloader but the tablet isn't that popular so unfortunately it might not happen for a while.

Some other devices can install ROMS without a unlocked bootloader. Of course those ROMS are limited in what they can do. But do you know if that's possible for this slate?

PS: Just checked and it's definitely possible! That way we can bypass unlocking the bootloader which is the difficult part. We would have to port a ROM, preferably MIUI which is relatively easy, using the stock ROM as a base. Only problem is that this would mean that the Android version would stay the same as stock. Not sure on that but I think that's the case. Updating the tablet to 4.2 or 4.3 would need someone to unlock the bootloader.

The root is permanent as along as you save the root in android tool kit and you will have to have the Chinese su give access to Super SU and then save it in the android tool kit, delete the Chinese su and then go back to the android tool kit and restore the root from there.

It would be nice to have someone port this to a nice rom but as you said the tablet isn't that popular and it make take a while for that to happen...

Regarding roms, there seems to be two options. First, we port a rom (e.g. MIUI which is extremely similar to stock unlike Cyanogen) using the stock rom as a base. This would mean the Android version would be the same and the rom would be limited. But, it is the easiest way to get a rom on the device. There's practically no coding knowledge needed. We would only need to alter some files for this to work. Then, we install this without any problems as it is practically the same as the stock- for example, it uses the same kernel.

The other method is harder but allows for more control. We use 2init to bypass the bootloader. I'm sure we could design a script or port a version to this device. This would allow us to port any rom (starting with ones designed for similar devices) with custom kernels. But, of course, this would be harder to achieve and take more time.

2init is basically a small script that overwrites the stock rom on the device's memory. Every time you start an android tablet the bootloader transfers the rom from read-only storage to memory and starts 2init to activate system processes. We hijack 2init using our own version of 2init. Our version would overwrite the rom on the memory, stop all stock system processes, start our custom rom processes and shutdown the stock 2init. This means we could run any rom without unlocking the bootloader.
 
I was able to root so thank you for the instructions. They were really helpful! I had to redo some of it when I lost root the first time but the second time it worked without any problems. Thanks again!

Ok after you got it rooted then when you open up supersu, the Chinese supersu should ask if its allowed when it does you will see the Chinese su program and then on the bottom left of the Chinese su click on that, then that will allow the Supersu to have permission's, then use the Android Root Toolkit to save the SuperSU and then you can delete the Chinese su. Once you do that clean up all the Chinese software off of the tablet and then go back to Android Root Toolkit and restore the supersu root that is saved there.

I was able to install the chines root app through browsing the chines store as you instructed and depicted with your pictures...i had to click the search icon and typed root...then looked for the icon that matched your pic. my phone rooted successfully, and i saved my root through android root tool kit. i then installed the supersu from play store and granted privileges and my phone turned off and failed to reboot. I then unplugged my phone and rebooted fine. checked for root and it was there. i went back in to android tool kit and tried to save the new root, but it said it was already saved....thus disallowing me to re save root with american supersu...any suggestions?

Hey there djdylon and Welcome to AF :)

Well once you have the SuperSU installed, try to update the binaries in it and then you should be good to go, no need to save it again as long as you have root, the only reason you save it with the Chinese su is because once you delete that you will lose root, but if it says you have root, just launch SuperSU and update.......:)

Hey there dalethefarmer, Welcome to AF :)

To answer your question what I ending up doing was going to the HP site and get the update from there and then booting into stock recovery and installing the update image and then rebooting and then let it update from there after it rebooted. Then after it updated I just rerooted it and it was done.. Kinda pain but it worked....:)
 
Hi, I encouter problems while rooting my slate 7, I followed all the steps and repeated them over and over but the tablet dosen't get rooted , when I press that blue button in the shuame application it loads to the half of the bar then I get a black screen saying I got to press Restore my files in the device after pressing it I get nothing the device shuts down , I've been trying this for 2 days :mad: and I didn't give up :D . please help me and thanks in advance :)
 
Hi samibk94, Welcome to AF :), yea like it says in the instruction's, the rooting software is buggy at best and It can take a lot of tries to get it to work, I spent a couple days myself before it would actually not do the black screen, but don't give up. You may try changing the port on your usb cable to your computer or try a different usb cable. But I does work, just got to be patient.......;)

You can go into the uninstaller or root browser and take it out, but make sure to save the root file in the Android Root Toolkit ;)
 
Does this work on the 1800 model from walmart with the atom z2460 processor in it?

I am trying to find out more because the atom processor in these tablets is x86 based and runs android 4.1.2 I need to know if this specific tablet can be rooted and if the process of rooting it is different since it is not ARM based.
 
I used the Chinese root. Then used SuperSU and deleted remains of it. Then decided to change the boot logo! Now when i boot it only shows HP static logo for a couple seconds, then a black screen with the backlight on. Please help. Thank you for any support.

Try launching the Chinese app and turn it on, it should pick it up and if it doesn't keep trying, I have had that happen to mine before...

So run the shuame program while my slate is showing the black screen? Also the device does not show up in my computer. Thanks

Edit- It does show up in my computer. As a portable device. I can see internal sd and external sd files.
 
Also my Slate was rooted fine for a week or so. It was when I went to change to boot logo using ROM toolbox, that the tablet refused to boot. It will only go to a black screen with the back-light lit. During that time my PC reads the device as USB storage. When I am in recovery the device shows as unrecognizable. The device cannot go into debugging mode because it does not boot. So, I'm not sure what to do because the device needs to be in debugging mode for anything to work. Hope that this description helps a little bit more.
 
Does this shuame program work with Slate 7 3400US?
This particular mode has 1280x800 resolution, 1.2GHz Marvell SOC PXA986 Dual-Core Processor, and T-Mobile 4G support, seems quite different from other slate 7s.
