Root Root Suggestions?

The only thing I can possibly think of to make my Vortex usable is root. I am intimidated by it, but I really just want to remove the bloatware. Any walkthroughs, or suggestions I should look into?

Use GingerBreak 1.2 to root. Use getitnowmarketings recovery thread to push recovery. Then make a backup and you are all set.
 
Thank you, Jmartino. Will I need a custom rom after that? I'm just afraid of breaking my phone. :/

I am terribly upset with my phone, I have maybe 5 apps installed, and maybe 100 text messages stored. A handfull of photos. Just disgraceful.

I am building a ROM for this phone. If you can wait it out, you won't be disappointed. Thanks.

You do NOT need to install a custom ROM on the Vortex to benefit from rooting. I rooted mine the day I got it and ditched the bloatware. That frees up a ton of space and the phone runs great. I've got over 60 apps installed and still have over 30 MB of free memory. And - Netflix runs just fine on it.

That being said - a custom ROM, while not for the faint of heart, is always appreciated since one can often add features not available otherwise, improve speed, performance, streamline processes, remove unnecessary files, etc. It remains to be seen what J will come up with. I'll be watching for it! :)
 
I used Gi8nger break last night to root my Vortex, but it still won't let me remove any bloatware. During the Ginger break install the SD card un-mounts by itself! I tried with a different SD card and the same result. Any ideas?
 
Gingerbreak will not remove apps, You can use Titanium Backup. This will allow you to back up the files and then delete them. This is what I have done and it seems to work just fine. Word of caution, be careful on what apps you delete as you can brick your phone. I deleted the just the major Verizon apps with out issue.
 
Add me to your notify list when you have your ROM ready. I would like to take a look. What I would like to see is a Nexus type install with Google products, ie: no bloatware, no Bing, etc. Im running 2.2 currently and it works just fine for my needs, plus 2.2 works really well with Z4.

Thanks for the help, sorry for being such a noob.... I've built PC's for years but this is like Chinese to me.

My phones was a bit messed up, so I reset to factory, installed a new Sd card, and re-installed the apps I want. Then I used Gungerbreak v1.3 and installed Titanium Backup. I ran Titanium Backup and backed up my apps and system files. . . now what do I do?

Does backing up via Titanium alone create the ROM for system restore/backup purposes? Where is the ROM stored, on my SD card somewhere?

Once my ROM is backed up then I can start removing Verizon bloat, or should i use another ROM to overwrite the whole enchilada?
