Root Root Tethering and Update to 2.2?

I have a friend that just purchased and IPAD 2 and I convinced him to let me root his Incredible to gain root and allow tethering. His phone for some reason stopped getting over the air updating and is still running software 2.1update1. Most of the guides I have read are guides to accomplish these things after 2.2 ota update. I have been able to root the phone using Unrevoked and installing the appropriate driver. It is still in 2.1. How do I update the phone to the most current version and gain wifi tethering access?
