Root root?

I just purchased my ascend 2 from Us Cellular. I must say i'm a little disappointed by the restrictions on the phone. I have beautiful widgets installed and other apps they arent working like they should. I am noticing the battery life is real bad on the phone. My question is can I root this phone? If so .. what is the best Rom to use? and directions to root this device. Thanks

Probably has 2.3.5 on it? Downgrade to 2.3.3, Install CWM, Root, Upgrade to CM7 by PlayfulGod.
