Root Rooted and Flashed Cyanogen - A LOVE STORY

Hi All,

A few weeks ago, I downloaded some LG update software and updated my phone to 2.2 (or whatever the latest update is). Unsatisfied with the bloatware and slow-down issues, I took a risk and researched rooting.

Through this forum, I was able to successfully root my Optimus T using Gingerbreak.

I downloaded the CM7 rom (CyanogenMod-7.1.0-Thunderg-KANG) and installed ROM MANAGER.

ROM MANAGER did not list my phone model when I went to do recovery. It only showed the OPTIMUS ONE. I ran into some problems because I could not find a stock rom to install with the Bootloader.

However, I had come this far and threw caution into the wind. I decided to just set my phone as being the OPTIMUS ONE.

At reboot, I selected the zipped rom on the sd card and waited.

INFINITE LOOP. The phone wouldn't start and it was stuck at the blue cyanogen skateboarding droid.

As it turned out, I forgot to wipe the data and cache.

Freaking out, I panicked and searched desperately for an answer. I found out that if I hold the power button + Volume down + Home button that I would be able to enter into the bootloader and clear my data.

I cleared my data and *BAM* I booted up into my brand new CM7.

I'm in LOVE with this phone. It's fast as hell and has SO many options. I also have TONS of internal room without the bloatware.

This phone has worked wonderfully for the past 2 days. The only hiccup I ran into was Market crashing (which was actually caused by me overriding the vibration setting in the default profile).

I love this forum and I am happy to be able to share my happy ending. :)

Hey: I've just rooted my phone and looking forward to flashing it with CM7.

On a few posts that I read, it seems CM7 prevented some to unlock the phone. Does this happen with you, or on a regular basis with CM7 flashes? I travel so I'd eventually like to unlock the phone, and it's probably more important to me than CM7. Just want to know they are not in conflict.

How difficult is it to flash it back to stock rom in case things do work out? I am not even sure where to look for the stock ROMs for optimus t..

Many Thanks.

What is the advantage of using CM7?

First off, no Carrier IQ (which I noticed you posted about in the "Bloatware must die" thread). Less internal memory is used which frees up space for more apps...but that isn't an issue in CM7 as ANY app can be moved to the SD card. There are hundreds more tweaks you can adjust as well.

When I first rooted my Op-T I wasn't interested in custom ROMs either. But the ascending ringtone drove me nuts - CM7 fixes this. I flased 6.5.8. Supposedly there is a new version available but 6.5.8 is rock steady...plus flashing a rom erases all previous data so contacts, etc... need to be re-entered.

Just run a nandroid backup of your current setup, install CM7 and give it a try. If you don't like it ( I doubt that) you can always restore to your previous setup.

For Optimus T (one): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=946354

Good luck,

Isn't there a way to back them up?
Yes. Titanium Backup works well for apps. Exporting then importing contacts to and from the sd card. But from my experience you still need to set default numbers for dialing, pictures if wanted, display settings, wi-fi settings, ringtones, notifications, etc...they're all independant settings. I can see it getting monotonous doing it over & over for every ROM change.

Think of it as reinstalling Windows...then having to reinstall all your programs and update everything else. It's not something I want to do weekly. But don't let that discourage you from trying CM7. You'll spend a couple days getting used to CM7 and updating all your apps, etc...At that point a nandroid backup can be made and with a couple pushes of a button you can restore any ROM you've ever used/installed.

Me too! CM7 is great!

I started with rooting my phone of course. Gingerbreak v1.2 worked perfectly. Easy as tapping a button on the phone.

Unfortunately ROM Manager didn't work for me. I heard he included a new version of the recovery program with the app. It didn't work on my phone, even when after multiple re-flashes. When I tried to flash the ROM, it wouldn't load recovery, but ROM Manager still did a complete wipe of my phone so I ended up right back on day one, but still on 2.2.2. Man I was upset, cause I'd lost everything on my phone, except for my music and images on the SD card thankfully, but didn't get anything out of it.

Went back and followed the instructions on XDA forums which involved flashing a recovery program they recommended on the phone, and downloading a remote terminal app on the phone. Did that, loaded CM7 on the SD card, went into recovery, cleared all necessary data, flashed the ROM, reboot and done!

It's GREAT and changed everything about the phone, right down to the animation when the screen turns off. It's pretty awesome by itself and comes with ADW Launcher integrated into the ROM. Honestly, the ROM is great out of the box and doesn't really need many changes.

Only three negatives I've found.

One is that the ROM comes with literally almost no applications installed. This is great for streamlining the phone but it's missing the essentials like Market. The thread over on XDA about this rom has a link right in the first post where you can flash the bare essential google apps like Market, so it's not really that big of a deal. Just takes an extra step. Seems to me that they should have just put it in there to begin with, but hey, they did an awesome job with this ROM and ask for nothing in return so I won't complain.

Two is that like all the other standard software T-Mobile supplied with this phone, Swype disappeared. I love Swype! And you can't download it from the Market. I tried a few other similar 'boards but they either had ads to entice you to get the paid version or they didn't work that well. Disappointment. THEN I found Swype Beta. You have to register, but you can download the app and install it on your phone. It's even better than the original Swype! It has a new voice to text generator made by Dragon something or other, I think. It works unbelievably well. Fast and accurate to an incredible degree. Want to know how accurate? I dictated this entire post to my phone. I'll have to go back and correct a few capitalization and paragraph spacing issues but it's picking up everything word for word.

Three is that Wifi calling disappeared. Some don't find it to be too useful, but it always worked for me. I miss it, because in my living room where I spend the majority of my time at home I have a cell signal black hole for some reason. Wifi calling let me kept sending messages and calls out when I needed to without walking around the room hunting for a signal. What's interesting is that for some reason since the ROM flash I actually get between half and full bars most of the time. Cool.

Only major change I've made other than my app compliment is to change the standard ADW Launcher to ADW Launcher EX since I'd already previously paid for it. I found it to be a little faster than the free version and the one packed with CM7.

Love my phone. It's now running 2.3.7 which is better than some of my friends new phones.

I'll manually add a screenshot in this post, I don't think the voice to text thing will figure that out lol.

I ended up liking SlideIT better than I liked Swipe, so even though I'm still running the stock OS, I removed Swipe. But the new version of Swipe that you're talking about with Dragon speech recognition sounds very interesting!
