Root Rooted and reset - Can't install new(er) Android version

Have an LG Optimus Elite on VM. Still on Android 2.3.7. Darned if I can find any built-in option to update Android. Decided today would be the day I jump up.

Rooted with ministro II, poot then downloaded an update from here:
http://androidforums.com/elite-all-...ta-cm9-virgin-mobile-sprint-08-30-2013-a.html

When I boot into the Android System Recovery Utility, I go to apply update from sdcard. I pick the zip file, and it only comes back with:

[HIGH]E:Can't updateusing filename.zip

Install from sdcard complete[/HIGH]

Am I missing a step somewhere? Did I download the wrong one?

Nope. Don't really know what I'm doing with all this. I'm slowly going through the list of the pre-requisites. We'll see where this takes me.

In the Recommended section of the page that was linked where it wants me to find the MSL. Stuck here.

Install the LGVM696 Drivers
download LGVM696.zip
Open the Zip and drag the LGVM696 directly to the root of your C drive. (do not let it create two LGVM696 directories -ie C:\LGVM696\LGVM696)
Run the 3 exe files
C:\LGVM696\LGUnitedMobileDriver_S4981MAN37AP22_ML_ WHQL_Ver_3.7.2.exe
C:\LGVM696\LG_SmartPhone\LGSmartPhone_ModemlinkDUN Drive_WHQL_ML_Ver_1.0.exe
C:\LGVM696\LG_SmartPhone\LGWindowsMobile_USBDriver _WHQL_ML_Ver_1.0.exe
No problems.
Start your phone normally, Enable Development, let the drivers install and enter in program commands.
Let them install how? Nothing happened when the phone came on. There's no where to enter any commands.
Go to Settings -> Applications -> Development and tick all on that page.
That was already done.
Let the drivers install on your computer before the next step
That was already done in step 3...
Dial ##DATA# click on Data Profile then edit. Enter in your SPC twice so that it reboots. It should reboot into charging rather than resetting.
I have no where to 'dial' anything. There's no prompt for an SPC, even if I knew what it was. Sadness.

Use a file explorer and navigate
Sys/devices/virtual/lg_fw_diagclass/lg_fw_diagcmd/msl
open the MSL file with a text editor

Thanks. I'm looking in the lg_fw_diagcmd dir and I've only got a power subdir and
  • name
  • nfc_testmode_result
  • result
  • return
  • state
  • subsystem
  • uevent

Thank you very much for putting up with me! CM9 is booting up now. I think so, at least. THis angry blue alien has been swimming through the ether for about 5 minutes now.

That's because you probably didn't format the system, data, cache, and dalvik cache before you installed CM9. Go back into the custom recovery, go to the Format menu, format system, cache, and data twice (to be safe.) Go back. Go to Advanced. Then wipe dalvik cache twice. Go back. Install the CM9 ROM again. That should do it. :)

Hey noob question...On my Optimus V I had a zip script that I could run to auto format all folders 3 times for me. It was very convenient. Does such a script exist for the Optimus Elite?
