Root Rooted but not rooted?

Hi guys,
Please forgive me if this is in the wrong place, but I have searched. Feel free to relocate it. I am a noob at rooting, but I'm not an idiot, but right now I feel like one.

I've just gone through this guide on my Desire Android 2.2. I've also read the FAQ associated, but I mustn't be understanding something

Everything went smoothly, right til the end where it says:

  • Go to the app Drawer. If there is an icon called "superuser" Your ROM has root access
  • Turn off the Phone. Hold Volume down and press power. At the HBoot screen, highlight "recovery" using Volume buttons, and press power to select. If you are evntually faced with a Black screen with green menu items, you have a custom recovery.

Superuser is there
I get the black screen and green menu.. but then what??
I've tried reboot now, I've tried install update from sdcard

I get back to Android and everything looks exactly the same.
I ran a couple of 'root' apps (shootme, terminal emulator) and I have no root.

Where have I gone wrong? I haven't even flashed a rom??
All I want is more space pretty much, and I thought this was an all-in-1 guide
I can give more information, just tell me what!

Thanks a lot guys and girls :)

If you have now clockwork recovery and you want more space, the best thing now would be to download a Rom.with a2sd+ and partition your card.

What else do you want from your phone? You like HTC sense?

hey, thanks for the reply

sense is ok, I am using Launcher pro, because I like the layout and options.
Speed, performance and storage are the main motivators for rooting.
storage obviously the main thing with the htc desire

if I find a rom like you suggested, will it work?

my first issue is, have I actually rooted my phone? I don't have permissions where I usually would through a temproot, so I'm guessing I did something wrong in the guide

Sounds like its gone wrong but you only need recovery to flash a new Rom. They will be pre rooted.

If you're using a launcher, might be worth looking at aosp roms like cm7 or oxygen

thanks man

That worked a treat, I am now running Oxygen, with a few glitches

I tried partitioning the drive through ROM manager to no avail

And all of my contacts now have duplicates (I only have google contacts, none on sim etc)

any ideas?
