Ok...I rooted my captivate thinking that i could install apps that are blocked on my phone, like Sirius XM, WiFI tethering.....even after rooting the programs are still being blocked and i cant install them...

am i missing something? im new to android and had an iphone that i jailbroke.....im confused on what rooting actually does i guess

someone correct me if i'm wrong, but the only way to install apps not in market is thru adb. actually, you're telling me you couldn't install wifi tether (which is on the market) either?

You're wrong. ;)

Considering the Captivate FAQ now is a sticky, is mentioned in dozens of forum regulars' signatures, and is mentioned in half the threads now there's little excuse to not know to always check there first. ;)

Sideloading - CapFAQ

I don't get why when rooted and with SU permission is side loading even necessary?
Why can't the block be defeated with root/SU?

It can be and if you had followed the link in my post directly above you you'd already know how by now.

Here's a simpler way to install non market apps if you're on a windows machine.
I tried to upload the file but if failed.

Once again, that method is also mentioned in the link already provided.

Asking questions in threads is pointless if people aren't going to read the replies with the answers.

Agreed.
I just saw "side loading" and didn't click your link so thought I would offer an easier alternative with a direct link.

To install Non-Market Apps now, all you have to do is update your Samsung Captivate software to Android 2.3. Do this by downloading Samsung Kie to your computer. After its installed, plug in your phone to a USB port(make sure phone is FULLY charged). Use the Kie software to update the phones software. After your phone is updated and rebooted, go into the settings menu. Go to Applications menu and check the box for Unknown Sources. You can now install all the non-market apps you want.
