What phone you got?

Check out the forum for your phone, in the all things root sub section, there will be other threads regarding custom roms etc. there retail be links to the xda developers forums where there will be instructions to download and prepare for a custom ROM.

Read carefully about each ROM, what it has and what you can do with it, look at the pictures of it and when you download it, try it out for a few days, if you don't like out, try another!

Remember and backup apps etc before hand!

Also, you could check out the kitchen and make your own themes. I have made a few, and it is really easy.
