Root Rooted on Monday, prompted to install GB on Tuesday

Lurker
The day after I finally got the nerve to unroot my Incredible running 2.2 I was prompted to take the Gingerbread OTA update (did I mention I have my own personal dark cloud?). Anyway. I haven't accepted the update because I've read some threads that say that if I do accept it I may not be able to root again. I used the Unrevoked method just because I run a Macbook for work and was traveling, didn't have access to my linux box at home, and the Unrevoked method had a root utility that ran on Mac. So, can anyone help me understand if its possible to take the 2.3.4 OTA update and what steps I should do to be able to root again after the fact? I appreciate any and all help.

Thanks mmolitor87. I tried your thread to manually update but got the red triangle on step 3. I did the factory wipe twice and tried again each time but still got the red triangle. I had to reactivate the phone with verizon to make it usable again. I'm back to the rooted 2.2. I guess what I want to know is:
1. If I take the OTA update, can I root again afterwards?
2. Can I turn off the OTA system update check? I saw a thread that recommended buying Root Explorer and renaming /system/etc/security/otacerts.zip to otacers.zip.bak but I still get the update prompt.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

Thanks a lot for your help. I checked the thread, saw that it had been updated, and downloaded the new update image. Got the red triangle and tried to force update from card and got similar error to the EPST post but with CityId. Since I did use Titanium to remove some bloatware (eg CityID) the best approach for me may be to go the build.prop route. I found the file but am not sure what I need to modify/add to stop the update. I found a line that says ro.build.id but not sure if that is the correct entry or not and if it is, what is the proper setting. I'm well versed in Linux and have compiled many a kernel back in my Win4Lin days. Just new to rooting android and all that goes with it. Thanks again for the help.

OK. So RTFP does work. Thanks a lot. I really just wanted the obnoxious notice to go away. After going back and forth on to root or not to root I was in a whole other world of ticked off when on the next day I got the update notification. I'm happy with the phone as is. May go with a Samsung Nexus and try Ice Cream Sandwich for my next phone when it drops but for now the Incredible is serving me well. Thanks again for the help.

So I am rooted with S-off, no other modifications or bloatware removed. I have the OTA wanting to install right now. If I return to stock recovery can I install the OTA via my phone or do I still have to download the file and update it manually?

Sorry I didn't see this posted anywhere else.

Thanks for the help!

I've not heard of anyone successfully accepting the OTA. You can give it a try. Just make a nandroid first and nothing else matters.
