Root Rooted phone won't work with SIM cards

Jim Robson

Newbie
Hello, I rooted my Note 2 and checked it with Root Checker and it said "Congratulations! Root access is properly installed on this device". I sold it on eBay and the buyer recieved this message when he tried to use it: "I tested it with 2 different SIM cards, the device askes for unlock code, it is locked" He later informed me: "Both SIM cards are from Israel , Orange and HOT-Mobile" I checked these providers and they are both GSM compatable. I had to give him a refund.

Why didn't this phone work for him? I'm afraid to sell it again until this problem gets resolved.

Thanks, Jim

Root has nothing to do with carrier locking - only bootloader unlocking (provided you followed a full root procedure).

Big difference.

If your N2 was from and locked to AT&T (for example), it's not going to work elsewhere until you get the unlock code from AT&T (again, for example).

PS - moved to the root forum because you may need to chat with other N2 rooters, not sure ok.

Thank you EarlyMon, for clarifying that. I appreciate it. Now that I understand, can you please tell me how to get the unlock code from AT&T (Good guess on your part) Why do I think it's gonna cost me something? Regards, Jim

Thanks EarlyMon, that was easy. They have an unlock page on their website. I hope there are no unknown charges on it. I bought it from a guy I know so it should be clean. It takes two days to get through their process. I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks again, Jim

Per the FCC, you ought not get charged unless you're not a customer. I suppose that's to keep eBay vendors from getting something for nothing. Not sure.

While I'm waiting for the unlock code to come from at&t, I can't help but ask; did I need to root it at all just to get it unlocked? If I get it unlocked, should I un-root it before I sell it? I'm really revealing my ignorance here but we are among friends. Thanks for the help. Jim

You didn't need to root it to do a carrier unlock.

As for the rest, I'm the wrong guy to ask.

Most people seem to want to return the phone to stock before selling.

I would find a properly rooted phone to be more valuable, provided that the root was done properly and everything works. First thing I'd do with a phone is root it. I hate rooting Samsungs so if you'd done me the favor of saving my time, I'd be all for it.

Once upon a time, a lot of people used to post that they feel the same way.

So - that's a judgment call you have to make, the market is fickle and there's no keeping up with the latest fashion.

If you sell it rooted, advertise if stock rooted or custom rom and what recovery you put on.

That's my 2 cents. :)
