Rooted S2, unlocked, now what?

Last night I used Odin and an XV*** kernel to root my sisters gt i9100p.

I then had to use a 's2 sim unlock' program found on googleplay to unlock the phone for $3.99 as I could not find a free version.

I had wanted to upgrade her OS from android 2.3.4 to something more modern. Yet when I go to software update it asks for Samsung account details or to create a Samsung account, neither of which work, no matter how hard I try.

Is there another way to update the phone?

Have I missed a step in the rooting process?

Should I use a different kernel?

Is there a widely recommended ROM I can now install?

also, when I plugged the phone back into my PC after rooting, the phone turned on fine, but it was not seen by Windows as the gti9100. In fact it wasn't seen at all! is this a major problem? How can I remedy?

any help is greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Hey thegutterpoet,

Sounds like you've rooted your phone - well done! You can verify if you have root by using an app from the Play store (Root Checker is good).

Now you need to read and understand the first couple of posts from Ironass here (http://androidforums.com/galaxy-s2-...t/482994-rooting-galaxy-s2-dummies-guide.html) - Very good information.

As for roms, there are too many to list. I am on Cyanogenmod 11 nightlies, and love them. The I9100P will accept any i9100 rom.

Also look up "i9100 rom install" on youtube - There are hundreds of videos showing to do...this will give you an idea of the steps you need to take.

cheers for the words, mate!

I am just wondering if I must choose a ROM which fits with the formerly installed android 2.3.4? or can I go straight ahead and install the latest brilliant ROM?

You can choose any ROM that is suitable for your version of handset. If you do not mind losing the NFC capability of the, "P", variant, you could flash either of the NEAT ROMs for Android 4.4.4 that are mentioned in #2.7 of the Rooting Galaxy S2 - Dummies Guide . Both of which I highly recommend. First make sure that you have Titanium, efs and nandroid backups as per #2.7 and #2.8 of the aforementioned guide.
