Root Rooted. What next?

Ok, so I have decided to Root my HTC Desire
I have read the guides and think I understand the processes and warnings

What isn't obvious to me is what happens after I have rooted my phone
Does it work as is?
Do I have to do other things to my phone to make it work?

Any guidance or pointing towards the right forums would be appreciated

To answer your question in the simplest of terms rooting will do nothing by itself.

If you follow the guides in these forums you will gain a much more useful custom recovery, root access & possibly s-off depending on which guide you follow. (Revolutionary gives s-off but Unrevoked doesn't) Root access ifs administered by the Superuser App which will have been installed on your phone as a system app as part of the root process.

Your phone will work as before & all of your apps will still be there along with all your data. The most significant thing though I ifs the custom recovery, which will allow you to install .zip files from your sd card while in recovery. That means you can install a custom ROM our flash new themes.

I suggest you revisit the root faq within the root guide on this forum. If anything is unclear ask first before doing anything.

Thanks. That answered many of my concerns and opened up a few more ;)

Can I leave my existing ROM or do I NEED to install/flash a new one?
What sort of things will installing a .zip file give me?
Where do I find how to use extended partitions and set them up?

Sorry if this all seems very basic and thanks for your help

You can use your existing ROM but you won't get any extra storage unless you use a custom ROM. You would install the new ROM from a zip file.

I would recommend using one that takes advantage of an ext partition on your sd card. Go to the root guide thread & follow the link to the root memory faq. That should answer most of questions.

Many thanks. That makes things much clearer

Am I right in thinking that all I would need to do after Rooting is flash the ROM to take advantage of the extra facilities? And those extra facilities are dependant on which ROM I choose to use?

It is very confusing for us newbies sometimes because all you knowledgeable guys use shorthand names and acronyms for all sorts of things, so thank you for your patience

Ok. If you want to make use of apps2sd+ (ie installing apps on the sd card rather than moving to sd) to gain space you need a ROM that supports it & an ext partition on your sd card.

If you have 4ext recovery it will do a very good job of positioning your card. Do not use any other recovery to partition as they often don't align the partitions very well. DO NOT USE MINITOOL PARTITION WIZARD. Gparted is the recommended way to partition via a pc. See the root guides for tutorials but 4ext recovery is probably the easiest way.

<sobs in frustration>
I am trying ot follow the S-Off and Root HTC Guide http://androidforums.com/desire-all...ff-root-htc-desire-revolutionary-updated.html and am stuck, once again, on terminology and shortcuts.
Section 3 states read and digest [FAQ] ADB and FASTBOOT for Windows I have read it and am none the wiser!!!
I have worked my way through everything and got to the ADB procedure. I have it up and running but ... what do I do with it now??
The other thing I can't understand is the instruction 4b) Root file - place this on your SD card Where do I get the root file??? I have downloaded Revolutionary and generated the Beta Key. But where is the Root File???
How do I install revolutionary? There is no setup package in the Zip file.

My brain is frazzled!!!!

There's a link in 4b (choice of links). It's the superuser package, the thing you flash to root the ROM.

As for installing revolutionary, it's so long since I looked at that (and that was on linux). Do you need an installer? What's actually in the zip? Is there an executable?

There is an executable in the zip. Running it opens a command line window briefly and then shuts it. Nothing else happens :(

I have downloaded the superuser package. Do I place the entire contents on my SD card?

I still have no idea what to do with ADB once it is running

So you have downloaded the Revolutionary for windows zip file? Open the zip & copy the revolutionary.exe file to your pc. Connect your phone via usb lead to your pc, while booted normally, before running Revolutionary. Then double click on the revolutionary.exe file which will open a command window & find your phone. You will need to enter the beta key that you obtained from the revolutionary website. The phone will reboot a number of times during the process.

If your phone is not found during the above process try powering off completely then boot into fastboot (hold the back button down while pressing power)

An alternative plan of attack would be to follow this guide which will give you root & a custom recovery (Clockworkmod 2.5.0.7 which still works well for the Desire). When you have completed you can run Revolutionary if you still want to S-Off.

If you have problems with getting your head around adb commands (like me) then Fastboot commander will act as an interface for flashing a recovery while in fastboot mode.

To answer your earlier question about putting the zip file on the root off your sd. That means just put it on your sd but not in any other folder. When you have a custom recovery installed, either by adb command or by running unrevoked, you can install from zip files.

Thank you for wording it in supposedly idiot-proof terms for me.
I have followed your instructions implicitly and am still getting the same result. Double clicking on Revolutionary.exe only produces a command line window which opens and closes. Nothing else happens :(

Sorry, I didn't mean to insult your intelligence. All I can tell you is that when I open the revolutionary exe I get the command window which remains open with the prompt "waiting for device". The window doesn't close itself. I'm running windows vista.

Other than downloading revolutionary again, trying a different usb port, or a different pc, I'm out of ideas. Hadron will almost certainly have more ideas.

Things to try:

Don't run the .exe file from within the zip file - extract the contents to a normal folder
Run the .exe file as Administrator - right click 'Run as Administrator'

Can someone tell me that what should I do to connect my bluetooth headset to glaxy s4 .before it was connected but I unpair it and after that now it is undetectable plrase help me

Perhaps the S4 sub forum may be able to help.

I have solved that part of the problem.
I hadn't turned on USB debugging as I had confused USB debugging with USB tethering

NOW the problem is that it won't accept the Beta Key.
I have tried re-generating one but it comes back with the same key.
Any ideas?

You are right in that you need to run the .exe file from a normal folder
However, running it as administrator is a problem due to there being no Admin password on my PC and the programme won't accept a blank password. This looks like it will necessitate a completely different problem solving excursion:rolleyes:

Try copying and pasting the beta key. I don't know why, but typing it is unreliable/difficult (I found the same while testing it).

Do you not have an administrator account on the PC? You could maybe temporarily make your user account an administrator for this purpose?
