Hey all,

Have you rooted your Legend? If so,

1] Why?
2] Which instructions did you follow?
3] Any issues?

Currently I do not see the benefit of doing so but happy to be persuaded otherwise :D.
 
Being the curious type I rooted my phone after about a week of ownership, main reason though was to debrand (vodafone).
Realised the latest software update then didn't work so I then flashed the HTC stock rom and left as is.

I followed the modaco instructions

However as I'm running XP there were issues with drivers for the phone when making the goldcard, which isn't explained, so I did find the solution elsewhere on t'internet.

If you're on vodafone you should at least debrand it. When (if) 2.2 is ever released you'll not want to wait all that time for vodafone to faff around with it before they release it.
OK maybe your vodafone warranty becomes void (you'll still have your HTC warranty though), but I'm sure if you have issues you can just reflash the Vodafone rom ;)
 
Interesting to know you still have the HTC warranty, I wasn't quite sure.

Mines debranded [purchased it off contract] so I may just stick with how it is currently. Like yourself I am curious, hence wanted to find out if its 'worth' it!! i.e. have you been able to install things that you now can't live without, that you couldn't if your Legend was still unrooted...
 
No point rooting now, only have to wait about 2-3 months until the 2.2 update comes out which will have nearly all the rooting features, apps2sd, wifi tinkering etc.

i was surprised by bell, my legend didn't really come with preloaded bell shit, and theres not any restriction it seems like, well none that i've come across, so i don't see the point anyway.
 
To those have rooted, was your Legend branded or unbranded?

If unbranded, did you still use a Goldcard? Apparently if your device is unbranded/unlocked, you don't need a Goldcard.

Wow, really? How comes, too much hassle for the result?

I actually started the process yesterday, have downgraded to 1.31, actual rooting still outstanding. I was looking at the NeonMod ROM, until Azure gets it's issues ironed out...
 
Well from first use of it the only thing I really use is a screenshot app, going through the process as well as backing up all the data such as phone numbers (I didn't think of doing the phonebook because I thought I had all the names saved on SIM card :S).

I'm sure once I learn more about different aspects of rooting and what it's capable of i'll change my mind, but at the moment, I should of just waited till Froyo comes to the HTC Legend, and then if I get sick of it I'll root but I did it a couple of months early I guess.
 
I rooted yesterday and am very glad I did, though I can't change my vote in the poll in this thread..!

Aas for your phone book, do you not sync contacts in Google? That's for another thread anyway.

One of the major benefits I've found with rooting is the ability to choose what ROM I want to run and therefore get away from the poor battery performance I have [along with many others] have been experiencing since the last OTA update.

There are some nifty modifications too, like the SuperCircle Battery mod to the notification bar.

I won't be using Azure ROM just yet [for everyone else's benefit, thats FroYo 2.2 for the Legend!!] as it doesn't seem 100% stable. I'm currently running NeonMod and very satisfied :).
 
Hi guys, I 'm new to all this droid speak, only just purchased a Legend yesterday. I would like to root the phone but I'm stuck at the first step!

When trying to create the goldcard, I first needed to setup ADB. I downloaded the latest SDK software and extracted it to C:\

I then checked the USB debug option on the phone and plugged it in. It recognises the Andriod phone and installs the drivers but it then prompts me to either install ADB drivers automatically or specify a certain loaction. I tried automatic but it didn't find any drivers. So i then tried to specify the C:\android-sdk-windows\tools folder to see if the drivers were there but it still does not see them :confused:

So now when I open device mgr I have ADB in 'other devices' with the yellow question mark next to it. I have searched the web looking for a direct download but for the life of me I cannot see them anywhere (I'm using Win XP btw)

I have a virgin mobile legend that i'd like to debrand... the main reason would be to be able to get the OTA updates earlier... I'd also like to get the crap apps off of it (there actually aren't many)

Why can't the telcos let you just uninstall this stuff... if you buy the phone shouldn't you be able to do whatever you want with it?

Take a look at this [HOWTO] DOWNGRADE to 1.31 which you can then root for Legend 2.1 - xda-developers :)
 
First thing I did when I got my Legend was to root it. The benefit of rooting ? the possibility to install applications on the sd card. So now I've an 8 GB sd card and lots and lots of applications. Second benefit for me is to be able to try cooked roms.
 
I have finally taken the plunge and rooted my legend. It is running 2.2 rom that is pretty much the stock vodaphone updated. I got it from xda [ROM]FroYo (un)Official WWE - Android 2.2 - Rom: 3.14.161.1 - Kernel: 2.6.32.17 - xda-developers, the a2sd version and it is running great. So no more waiting! I had trouble with the w7 64bit drivers and still do but I got adb devices to see the phone, so I could root it. I have now setup the android sdk on my mac to access adb and it is working consistently without drivers.

ditto except the problems I had were miner -- and uninstalling the HTC Sync software cleared up the bottleneck that allowed adb devices to show my phone. I recommend it to everyone, because you can have complete control of your file system and remove all the junk possible to maximize the little internal storage (virtual memory) that we got.
