I am trading my iphone 4 for a HTC Raider that is rooted. I am wondering what does 'rooted' mean and what can I do with it that a non-rooted phone could not?

Rooting gives you complete control over your phone. You can uninstall apps that otherwise cannot be, customize every aspect of the phone. change processor speed, install apps that are for rooted devices only etc. Free wifi tether also.
