Root Rooting a G2 Touch - need CURRENT instructions

There is so much out of date/generic/incorrect/contradictory stuff on the net, it's hard to know what to follow.

I have a G2 Touch shipped a couple of months ago and running the latest T-Mobile firmware from the UK website.

I have tried the "quick" method, that just involves running the InstantRoot.apk and it did not work :-(

How do I get Root? (More specifically, I want to wipe and load "Sense Hero 2.1" ROM)

My phone details:

Firmware 1.5
Model: T-Mobile G2 Touch(UK)
Baseband: 63.18.55.06FU_6.35.07.08
Kernel: 2.6.27-0078c992 htc-kernel@and18-2 #821
Build: 2.73.110.26 CL#69351 release keys
Software: 1.0.0.A6288

If someone can point me to the easiest way to get this done, I would be MOST grateful. I'm sick of the endless official 2.1 delays.

Cheers.

Thanks. Took a while, and involved.

Creating a Goldcard
Downgrading to old HTC Standard
Rooting using normal method.

I am now running Sense Hero 2.1 and it's working pretty well for me...

Many thanks for the links and the smart guys at xda.
