Rooting a Hero..... and picking a ROM suitable for this phone.

I'm close to rooting my HTC Hero (Sprint). I don't mind the Android 2.1 that's on it at all, and I don't need anything beyond that, but I have several (meaning, a bunch) of bloatware apps on it that I'd like to remove, take out back, and beat mercilessly for ever even being on this phone. Sprint NASCAR for one.

That and the Facebook app seems to have been corrupted such that I can't even up date it, the app just freezes upon opening, and I cannot uninstall it (at least not that I can find).

I do not use this as a cell phone but just as a glorified touch-PDA/MP3/app machine. I have a 32GB SD card on it.

Any suggestions?

I am looking for a NOOB-FRIENDLY way of rooting this thing without bricking it.

Google the Z4root.apk and run that. It will root your phone with one click. Then you can install a nice fast, bloatware free ROM. I suggest CyanogenMod. :)

Moving thread to the root section. KitsapAndroid is right on the money for finding and using Z4Root to root your Sprint HTC Hero.

As for debloating, you can download Titanium Backup from the Google Play Store and use that to remove apps you do not want. I would recommend "freezing" those apps first until you can determine that deleting them will not cause other issues with your handset.
