Root Rooting a Sprint Design

Lurker
Hello there guys. Well I just got a basically brand new Design shipped with 2.3.4 and kernal 2.6.35.10, and have unlocked the bootloader.

Honestly I am kind of overwhelmed by the information provided here. Rooting used to seem simple, but I never went about doing it or had a reason to until now.

Basically what I need is to achieve root. Some of the roms here say "for root users only", though I am unsure about how to achieve root without flashing a rom. All I really need to do at the moment is be certain I can backup my phone before beginning to play with it, and to achieve root with the ability to USB or WiFi tether (without easytether and PDAnets's lack of SSL and UDP support). I plan to start flashing rom's around, but don't really intend to without backing up what I have now, something which seems fairly undocumented, at least in this forum and where I have checked around on the web. Once I am rooted, I am not too worried about having to change MMS settings as I can get the MSL without dealing with sprint then, so yeah, with the very little direct sprint support, it would be nice to be able to root before flashing a rom if possible so I can backup the settings, as mine have always been abnormal usernames and not simply my phone number. Though worst case I could always just deal with sprint and make stuff up on that one ;)

I would appreciate the help greatly guys, this seems like a pretty nice community too, I hope to stay around and play with my phone, flash some kernals and roms in the near future :D Right now I just need fracking tether though -__-

First order of business is to get a recovery on your device. Next you can flash a rom. No need of root before you flash.

Get recovery.
Make backup of current system.
Flash a different rom (might I suggest one of the roms by 2fast?)
Enjoy.
