Rooting and stock android

Hi guys,

I am a bit confused about this.....I want a stock android phone but Nexus S seems to be missing a few good things the Galaxy S has. Now if i root a Galaxy S can I install stock android on it but still use the features on it that are missing on the Nexus S?

Also, will I be able to then upgrade the OS on my rooted stock galaxy s when one is available, for example when ICS is released. Now I am assuming that on the Nexus S i will be able to upgrade to ICS or any android upgrade when its released but on a Galaxy S i will be able to do so only if Samsung releases that upgrade.

Dont know if i'm making much sense, but some help will be greatly appreciated!

Rooting alone doesn't change the features offered by the stock OS on your phone; the usual analogy is that it's like getting administrator access to a Windows PC. If the Samsung has stuff the Nexus doesn't, my guess (I have never used either phone) is that these are part of Samsung's TouchWiz interface. The Nexus runs plain vanilla Android.

So no, you won't lose those features just by rooting, only if you install a custom ROM that lacks them.

Rooting will prevent you from accepting official OTA updates (at least, it does on my phone). On the other hand, leaked versions of the OTA or custom ROMs with similar feaures will likely be available to rooted owners long before an official update is available.

I'd suggest checking the Galaxy S forum to find out more about rooting it and flashing ROMs. Every model has its own quirks.
