Root Rooting and Voodoo for Dummies

IamAl

Newbie
Hi there - new here and new to rooting and applying lag fixes, etc... I have followed every instruction I can find to do what I want to do to my Android 2.2 Galaxy S, but keep running into hurdles.

My phone can not do the three button reboot. So after a lot of trouble, I eventually got ADB working, and through the command prompt, managed to reboot the phone (also only after discovering all the instructions I had read refered to the tool folder in AndroidSDK, not the 'platform-tools' folder which is the one I required for some stupid reason!!) Anyway... downloaded voodoo for Froyo, renamed to update.zip, copied onto the root of phone, rebooted into recovery, tried to install the update file, but keep getting "signature verification failed" error message.

So after more hunting around hundreds of forums, I found that on 2.2 you have to root the phone (apparently didn't need to on 2.1). So I downloaded Z4Root, installed it, ran it, clicked the button to root the phone, it starts doing it's thing, then crashes. WHY????

I don't know what else to do.... I need to root my phone, have looked at using ODIN, but I am unsure of this. Please help....

Just tried rooting it again using Z4Root - all works fine until it says "Acquiring root shell", then the phone vibrates once, stay son the screen for a few more seconds and closes it. Then a few seconds later it vibrates three times...

Although I haven't done rooting or Voodoo myself (waiting for 2.2.1 update), this is what I can suggest based on what I've read:

(1) Try using SuperOneClick for rooting, many forums have complained about z4root's incompatibility with Froyo (2.2)

XDA thread: [APP]SuperOneClick v1.5.5 (Root, Unroot, Enable Non-Market App, Get UNLOCK code) - xda-developers
Guide by UnlockR: How To: Root Your Android Phone (SuperOneClick Method) | TheUnlockr

(2) You need to downgrade the recovery version to 2e, that allows for unsigned updates to be installed (reason for the signature verification error when installing Voodoo)

XDA thread: [recovery hack] How to get back recovery 2e - xda-developers

(3) Also recommend that you fix the 3 button combo issue. I have the same problem, still haven't tried fixing it though, hence my phone is still running stock firmware.

XDA thread: [FIX][UPDATE: 02.Jan.2011][110% SAFE] 3-Button Combo FiX for Selected/ALL Firmwares - xda-developers

Followed instructions to get to 2e as per follows :

1. uncompress the downloaded file recovery 2e and copy the direcotry to sdcard and rename it to recovery2e
2. Using root explorer copy File recovery from recovery2e on sdcard to /system/bin
3. Using root explorer copy Folder recovery in xbin to /system/xbin
4. If did not work try copy xbin folder over /system/xbin folder

NOW MY PHONE WON'T START UP..... ?????????????

ADB does still recognise it, but when I try 'adb reboot recovery', it restarts the phone to the same point where it has the GALAXY S GT-I9000 screen.... before the recovery screen or logo screen

did you run the mount cmds? copy/paste the instructions from XDA thread:

# put archive contents in a folder called recovery2e on /sdcard/
# open a shell and get root (ADB or Terminal on Phone, type su and pres enter / accept )
# remount /system rw (busybox mount -o remount,rw /system)
# rename recovery in /system/bin to recovery3e (for backup purposes)
# copy "recovery" from /sdcard/recovery2e/ to /system/bin/ (cp /sdcard/recovery2e/recovery /system/bin/)
# copy the folder /sdcard/recovery2e/xbin/recovery to /system/xbin/ (cp -rr /sdcard/recovery2e/xbin/recovery /system/xbin/)

There's another thread I came across, not sure if this will help you out:

[RECOVERY] ClockworkMod Recovery for Galaxy S i9000 (FINAL! SAFE!) - xda-developers

No I didn't do that - I read through the thread and the post I copied above was what I did because my understanding of it was that was all that was required...

I have my phone working again - As I said, I was still able to access it via ADB, so I thought I'd try ADB reboot bootloader (don't know why I tried this, but I thought I had nothing to lose) and it rebooted the phone, and booted up normally - but it still freezes when I run reboot recovery.

Those instructions pretty much look the same to me anyway, except for :

# open a shell and get root (ADB or Terminal on Phone, type su and pres enter / accept )
# remount /system rw (busybox mount -o remount,rw /system)
# rename recovery in /system/bin to recovery3e (for backup purposes)

which I didn't do - so I don't have a backup of the original file

So without having done a backup of the original recovery file, how do I get it back? ANyone have a copy I could use?
