Rooting Android without Apps

Hi,

Is it possible to root an android device ....

  • Without using any third party applications like Kingo Root?
  • Without Custom Recovery or Custom ROM?
If yes, please guide me, how to do?

Hi,

I tried Kingo Root for root access of Micromax Canvas A1 (AQ4501) but its failed all time.
How to root Micromax Canvas A1 (AQ4501) which is upgraded to Android 6.0.1?
I don’t want to go for Custom Recovery and Custom Rom. I just want to root it.

Please guide me.

Long story short: No.

The third-party app approach exploits privilege-escalation vulnerabilities in the Android OS. The app is required to package/run that exploit. You can't go that route without the app. This approach is also a hack (literally), so you may run into unexpected issues along the way. It's generally not really recommended unless there is no other way (bootloader can't be unlocked, etc.).

Rooting the right way always involves flashing a custom recovery, which can then be used to flash software that wasn't signed by the manufacturer (like superuser.zip).

With few exceptions those are the ways to root a device.

What device do you have, and/or why don't you want to use either of those rooting methods?

Just to add to @codesplice's excellent post and info: if you have an unlocked bootloader, then you can indeed tweak a copy of your boot.img (boot partition) to include the root components and flash (via fastboot) that on your device. Boom, root :).

(there's much that I omitted from the above, but that's it in a nutshell)

That obviously fits your criteria (no app or custom recovery) but I'm betting it likely does not apply in your case.
