Root Rooting Before Activating

Droidula

Android Enthusiast
I am currently on a different carrier, but will be switching over to the Evo V and Virgin Mobile very soon. I already bought the phone, and would like to set it up in the meantime; put all my apps on it, set it up how I like it.

Part of setting it up though would mean rooting it, since I want to use Titanium Backup to copy over some apps and their data which I don't want to lose. I've never rooted a phone that wasn't in service yet, so I just want to be cautious. I'm assuming this would make no difference at all, but just to be sure: would rooting this phone before activating it cause it to have any issues trying to activate when I'm ready to?

I'm 100% sure rooting your device before activation will not do anything wrong. Rooting doesn't mess around with any carrier files and such, I'm sure.
You can wait for a more experienced individual (like a dev) to help you out if you'd like.

EDIT: Oh just make sure to not flash a custom ROM. Root and stay on the stock rom and once you activate it, feel free to flash roms. :p

For now I'm happy with the stock ROM. I've never flashed a ROM before, I've always used stock and downloaded a different launcher if I wanted more options. This is my first time with sense, and it's ok so far. So, no worries about ROMs yet, just wanted to make sure I didn't waste my time setting up the phone and rooting it, only to have problems activating it later. Thanks!

So if I was on another ROM, then flashed stock ROM + root for example, could I activate on that? Just curious

This was the first rom I've ever flashed on this phone. I tried to go a full week on completely stock but ended up rooting and flashing this 4 days in lol

I haven't used it exclusively yet, but the stock sense seems ok so far. What ROM did you flash to? I'm reluctant to because of bugs and broken features. What would you say is the biggest feature/reason that made you flash? I did the rooting last night, it seemed intimidating but it went alright. If I could find a step-by-step noob tutorial for flashing a ROM I would maybe consider it.

LeeDroid tweaks are a must-have. Once you use a ROM with full LeeDroid, you don't ever go back to stock. The huge collection of extra quick settings toggles are super useful for me, anyway. I'd recommend you try out ZR3DX for an idea of what is possible, but also Harmonia 3 if you'd like a minimal experience.

I just realized I posted in the wrong thread lol

I meant to post that in the Harmonia thread. Leslie had it posted on her forum and that was really the first custom rom besides jmz's stock deodexed rom.

Such perseverance! (seriously) I went about...4 minutes: open box -> power on -> activate -> follow newbie flash guide (ZR3DX on mine, JMZ stock odex on wife's).

I didn't pay $300x2 for "ok". Personally, I don't like to settle and don't unless I have absolutely no choice.

What ROM did you flash to? I'm reluctant to because of bugs and broken features.
ZR3DX had an issue or two that I was able to resolve (wrong voicemail apk); the bugs I currently have exist in stock (notification LED not flashing whilst plugged in and radio resource error). I don't know of any features that are broken (I don't know what beats audio is [DSP?] so that may be an issue.)

I'm going to try MeanROM next (on wife's--she's hating stock after a few days and I have mine set up the way I want).

No need to be reluctant: first thing after you root, make a backup of your OEM ROM (per sticky guide) and you can always revert to it if you don't like any of the custom choices. 4eXT is a wonderful thing and worth every 291 pennies.

What would you say is the biggest feature/reason that made you flash?
LeeDroid tweaks. They are pretty much the same initial reasons we went to CM7 on our Triumphs.

If I could find a step-by-step noob tutorial for flashing a ROM I would maybe consider it.
The sticky in this forum works perfectly; there's no need for apprehension.
Put it this way: this is only my second Android phone, with my first being the Triumph for 4 months (stock ROM lasted maybe an hour on that one).

No self-respecting geek will let anything remain stock within the first 24 hours of ownership. :D The instructions are posted so you can dive right in; the trial-and-error part was already done!

Even gaining s-off isn't as bad as the first read makes it sound, just read up, watch the YouTube videos and in the end it's as easy as going to the bar and having a couple of beers. ;-)

Anything but the stock rom and it will not work, went through this yesterday, when i gave my gf my triumph.

Looks to me he has this situation all worked out by the looks of his devices listed lol.:p

At least I hope he does this thread is over a month old. :p
