Root Rooting/Flashing your MT4G

Hi, I'm new to the rooting/flashing android. I'm specifically trying to get my phone flashed to 2.3 CM7 nightlies build they just released. Sorry if this is going to be a duplicate thread of somesort but most of the thread i found to be bit confusing as most people seem to be in the midstep and i'm just getting started and have no idea (newb here). So I was hoping if someone can point me in the right direction as to what link I should take a look first to educate myself.

At the moment I'm on the page this forum provided, theunlockr.com. I'm assuming i would have to follow the direction of Perm root/S=off. but what does S=off mean?

would i need to basically follow this guide + how to load a custom rom with visionary?...

personally I would recommend going over to xda-developers for rooting/flashing. it's where I get all my stuff for rooting and developing and such
here is the link to the section for rooting/flashing myTouch 4G Android Development - xda-developers
and here is the section for the Glacier/MT4G in general HTC Glacier: myTouch 4G - xda-developers

Visionary is just for rooting, to flash ROM you need to either boot into recovery or and easier way is to use ROM Manager from the market.

not sound rude or elitist... but if you are new to all of this I wouldn't recommend trying to jump right into playing around with the CM nightlies. I would start with just reading all you can, and when you are completely ready then just start with rooting and flashing one of the stock based or CM6 ROMs.

HERE is where I dipped my toe in the water. Temp rooting is really easy and not permanent. Hence the name.

Next I purchased Titanium and froze some apps.

Try those two things first. For me it was a good way to get started.

When you lose root from not doing a perm root, everything else stays the same? I had thought losing temp root means being flashed back to stock.

I'd assume you have to reroot everytime you want to run Titanium Backup? What brings it back to unrooted after a temp root, just reboot?

Question 1.. I dont understand...
Question 2. Not with the new update. I root once and thats that. It stays rooted.

1. As in when you lose temp root, your phone is restored to its state before temp root.

2. If you root once and that's that, how is that a "temp" root?

LOL.. Yes when you loose temp root its back to the way it was with some rooted software that wont work anymore.

In regards to the temp root. Visionary now has the option to do a temp/perm root. its an extra button you push. really simple...

The big difference between a REAL root and a Temp root is the on/off when you boot. I cant remember what its called but the real perm root can brick your phone if you screw up one syllable.

With temp root its only pushing a few buttons. If you ever want it to go back to the unroot all you have to do is push unroot.

In regards to turning off your phone and restarting and all is mostly when using titanium backup and you freeze or uninstall your apps. That app removes them however once you reboot they are back. I use the free version and thats what happens to me.
