I dont know much about rooting and i have just heard of it if i were to root my phone will it void my warranty with MetroPCS?

It totally voids the warranty and most insurance. And it has nothing to do with updating the pphone, except that most OTA updates won't happen if the phone is rooted.
And rooting will probably give you no advantage. All it does is give you administrative access to the operating system. Very few apps, probably none that you want to run, need that.
