Rooting Help.

I'm using the following guide from XDA to root my Samsung Galaxy S II...

[ROOT APP] Updated: 20/08/11 - S2 Root v1.3 - One Click Root and UnRoot! - xda-developers

For the most part I understand what I'm doing but when it tells me to download an insecure kernel, I've no idea which one to choose. How do I know which is right for me?

Check your kernel version Menu>settings>about phone> Kernel version...
The part you need to look for will be 4 letters then a number eg XWKE1, XXKH2, XXKG5 etc. Match that with the insecure Kernel.

Thanks for your response. Mine is BVKG3. The closest I can find is BVKE2, will that be alright?

Are you running Android 2.3.3 or 2.3.4?

Yes they are both 2.3.3 Kernels released in the same month so you should be ok.
I have had a quick look at the guide you linked and it doesnt appear to mention if it installs Clockworkmod. This is needed to install Villain. Can I suggest you follow the guide in my sig instead (it installs CWM for you)

I had a look at it but don't really understand it. I don't have much experience with this stuff. Like the first step is...

Unzip the attached CF-Root-xxx-vX.X.zip

Would I still be using the XWKG1 kernel that you told me to?

Lol basically my whole reasoning behind rooting the phone is cause it's currently locked to Orange UK and I need to run an app I got recommended to unlock it but it requires root access.

Ok cool got that and Odin 1.85 downloaded. So all I need to follow are the Odin Instructions (long) and that will root the phone?

Yes. Its quite easy once you have done it once

The guides are a bit over complicated, it confused me when I first did it.

LMAO, ok even for me that ended up being simple. Do you have a guide available for flashing VillainROM available? May as well go all the way now

Start at step 3 as you are already rooted.

When you have flashed villain I recommend updating the Kernel and Modem.
Here is the Kernel.
Place the zip file on your phones memory.
Reboot into CWM recovery.
Go to install zip from sdcard
Choose the kernel zip file, install and reboot.

Download the modem zip file here
Place the zip file on your phones memory.
Reboot into CWM recovery.
Go to install zip from sdcard
Choose the modem zip file, install and reboot.

You can check the files installed by going to settings>about phone>
Kernel version should be: 2.6.35.11-ninphetamine-2.1.3+ninpo@titan#25
Baseband Version should be: I9100XXKH3
