Root Rooting: Is it risky? Is it worth it?

I have NO clue how to do this. I have a Verizon RAZR Maxx HD. Nice phone but would like more speed. I see a lot of people on Craigslist saying they will do it. Is it risky? What are the potential bad effects?

Without getting phone specific.... Rooting is like having administrator privileges on a Windows pc you can change just about everything. With this comes the possibility of changing something that could make your phone inoperable. It also voids the warrantee so there's no help from Verizon or Motorola if you mess something up.
