You can't root 2.3.5 directly. You have to root 2.3.4, use Voodoo OTA Rootsaver, update to 2.3.5, then restore root. Lemme copy/paste you the steps in a sec...

• SBF to 2.3.4 (if you aren't already running it)
• Root using Motorola One Click or Pete's Root (NOT zergrush, I've been using the One Click without problems, but have had an issue once with Pete's)
• Install Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper from the market
• Open Voodoo, Protect root, Temp Unroot
• Put the 2.3.4-380 to 2.3.5-418 (or whatever version you require) on your sd-card and apply update using the stock recovery, or download and install the update from your phone settings.
• Run Voodoo, Restore Root, Delete Backup

Will voodoo do all this? also where do I find the 2.3.4 to spf. Is there any instructions on how to do the spf. ? i have done it before but its been long time.

You can find any tools and instructions in the stickies in this forum.
And all Voodoo does is protect your root. It will back up and restore root files, temporarily unroot your phone, and restore your root.

Basically you're going to backup everything you want to (MyBackup has become my favorite backup utility lately), flash your phone using RSD Lite and the 2.3.4 SBF file, root your phone, install and use Voodoo, update to 2.3.5, then restore root with Voodoo.

Remember, take some time and look through the stickies.

Thanks for the awesome step-by-step framework for rooting the droid x2. I'm a rooting noob, so I read as much stuff as I could before attempting this, and I've just finished successfully in under an hours worth of work.

I, however, got stuck at the same spot as the poster above: I couldn't figure out how to manually install an OTA update from an SD card. So, if someone could provide a handy step-by-step guide for this, as I was not able to find the answer anywhere else, that would be awesome!


I got around not being able to do it like this:

After I SBF'ed to 2.3.4 and rooted (used Pete's tool and verified root with Root Checker, then installed Voodoo OTA rootkeeper and did those steps to protect root), I was getting a roaming delta-symbol and I did not have the option to select the update from the "About Phone" area on the phone settings.

I finally used the *228 option 2 method, which apparently re-auth'ed my phone with Verizon, fixed the roaming issue, and also made the 2.3.4 to 2.3.5 OTA available for update automagically.

OTA installed, root access restored with Voodoo, and confirmed again with Root Checker.

And now to freeze/uninstall some bloatware.

• To manually install an OTA you simply download the OTA (don't unzip it)
• put it on your sd-card
• boot into stock recovery (you passed it when you were hitting the down volume button looking for RSD, you just stop at system recovery, hit up, then when the triangle shows up hit the up and down volume buttons together)
• install update from sd-card

That's it. If you need it often, it's a quicker way to update your phone if you keep the OTA on your computer.
