Root Rooting phone before activating on Virgin Mobile

Maybe this is a dumb question, but I couldn't find an answer to this exact question. I want to make sure I know what I need to before I blow $150.

I have a rooted Optimus V with virgin mobile and I'm looking to upgrade to the HTC EVO V 4G, but I would like to root this (the HTC) phone brand new out of the box before transfering my number to it and activating it; mostly so I have no data on the phone to lose and so that in the unfourante case I brick it, I still have "my phone".

Somebody please put my mind at ease.

*edit* after more research it looks like I'll need to activate first...?

Yes, to make it a whole lot easier.

You should have no problem rooting before activation, just don't flash a new ROM

Just unlock and install superuser and twrp
And stay stock

You can root, flash a recovery, etc. As long as you activate BEFORE you flip to a non-stock ROM, you'll be fine.

Then once activated...you're going to flash ROMs daily. At least I do. (Its really more like hourly. CM10, mobster, King Kang, CM10 Gangnam, inbREDed, Viper. Just a few that I switch between daily now...)
